Windmill Community Gardens

Windmill Community Gardens We are a group of local people nurturing a wonderful community garden in the heart of the city.

The Gardens are a great place where anyone can come to find out more about growing their own food in a changing climate. We cater for all abilities and welcome any nationality or age group. We also welcome visits from groups outside of our session times - schools, interest groups and clubs, and can provide bespoke activities and education sessions, as well as running events and workshops.

Thanks to an initiative from the National Trust, we were able to get free tickets to take some of our volunteers on a trip to Clumber Park to see their amazing walled garden. It's very impressive! Also great to see that they've now gone "No Dig" on most of their veg beds, which seem to have coped with the drought rather well, despite not being watered frequently. Everyone had a great time, even our camera shy folk!

Thunder and lightening didn't derail our Volunteer Celebration at Windmill today, but all the rain did make it possible to finally try out our new pizza oven which worked a treat! We did have a plan b - polytunnels are wonderful safe spaces if thunderstorms get too close, which fortunately they didn't!

Perfect weather for our double workshop Sunday. Skilled woodworker Steve Hunt lead a group carving beautiful little birds in the shade gazebo, whilst Tracey and Allotment Chef Erica lead a workshop on salad growing, unusual salad ingredients and how to use them, ending up with participants making their own special salad dressing in a jar, using Erica’s special recipes. We finished with everyone enjoying the fruits of their labours with a slap up lunch in the sun.

The forecast is very hot for Thursday, so we'll be open very early for watering and finish early before the heat really gets going. Come down any time from 8am to 1pm. No food, but there will be yoga and other activities in the shade alongside the watering!

Harvesting is well under way at Windmill, with pears, apples, Nottingham cob hazelnuts, tomatoes, courgettes and beans all coming ready in good amounts. We had time for a little creative fun too.
We gave everything a deep watering - thanks to Rosie, Bryn, Derek, Anna, Hasti, Aryas and especially Judah for working so hard carrying the cans! We’re still topping up the mulch! Rosie got hold of some lovely fleece and we added even more dried grass.

Derek is very proud of looking after the ramp for us, and asked if we could name it after him, so we did!

For a long time, at Windmill we tried to make ourselves welcoming by painting "welcome" on our raised beds in as many languages as possible. Since we got the new beds, we've missed having this so many thanks to the wonderful team from VF, who helped us make a great start with a painting day. They did a wonderful job and even found some time to do a bit of path clearing for us.
We're aiming to have as many languages spoken in Nottingham represented as possible, so if you'd like us to add "welcome" in a specific language, let us know!
