🎉 Penblwydd Hapus Colin Cole on your 107th Birthday! A D-Day Veteran and the last surviving member of the RAF Sea Rescue team involved in the Normandy landings, Colin spent years rescuing downed pilots in the English Channel, later dedicating his career to teaching, educational psychology and supporting his local community.

His story is a powerful reminder of the generations of service, resilience and community spirit that continue to shape lives across the UK.

When asked about reaching 107, Colin's response was characteristically modest: "It's just another day!"

Colin marked his remarkable birthday surrounded by friends at the Veterans' Centre at RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobowen.

And his secret to a long and happy life?

"Mispent youth and keeping fit," he says with a twinkle in his eye.

Llongyfarchiadau Colin from everyone at Age Cymru Powys! We wish you a very happy birthday and thank you for a lifetime of service to others.

Colin Cole, from Oswestry, who today celebrated his 107th birthday with a party at the RJAH Veterans' Centre in Gobowen.

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. We Are Hourglass report that one in six older people are victims of abuse. That’s over 16% of our mothers, fathers, uncles, aunties, grannies, grandads, friends and neighbours. Around 2.6 million people over the age of 65 are victims of abuse each year in the UK.

Older victim-survivors who feel invisible to the systems designed to protect them. People experiencing coercive control from an adult child. Older women trapped in abusive relationships after decades of harm. Older men isolated, manipulated and financially exploited. Victim-survivors living with dementia, disability or poor health, often dependent on their abuser for care and support, whose experiences are too often misunderstood or overlooked entirely.

Despite twenty years of progress driven by committed professionals, campaigners and policymakers, older victim-survivors remain too often side-lined and ignored.

That is why the Hourglass message this World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is simple but urgent: Better Understood. Still Overlooked. This campaign - THEN. NOW. NEXT. – is about confronting those realities through honest reflection and meaningful dialogue, while challenging ourselves to ask what must happen next and what we must do to make it happen.

Hourglass (formerly Action on Elder Abuse) offers a free-to-call 24/7 helpline for older men, women and their families suffering from the six forms of abuse: Domestic, Physical, Psychological, Economic, Sexual and Neglect. You can call them on 0808 808 8141.

This year’s United Nations theme – “Beyond Awareness: Making Elder Abuse Prevention Work” – challenges us to do more than notice… it calls us to act:

* Check in on someone

* Be aware of the signs

* Speak up if something doesn’t feel right

Every older person deserves dignity, respect, and safety and no one should feel invisible as they grow older.

Start a conversation. Be the difference.

📢 Friday Feedback 📢 One of the most common things we hear at Age Cymru Powys is, "I didn't think I'd be eligible." Many older people miss out on vital financial support simply because they don't know it exists, or because navigating the system feels too daunting.

This week, we're sharing some lovely feedback from an 86-year-old Powys resident who reached out to our team. By guiding them through the process, we were able to uncover support they didn't even know they were missing, helping to provide extra financial security and peace of mind.

In their own words:

"I had no idea I was entitled to benefits, and at 86 years old, your service has been so helpful." 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Let us help you check

No matter your age, and no matter what your financial situation is, it is always worth double-checking. Millions of pounds in support, such as Pension Credit and Attendance Allowance, go unclaimed by older people every single year.

Our friendly advisers are here to do the hard work for you. Through our specialist support, we can:

📋 Carry out a full, confidential benefits check

✍️ Help you fill out complex forms from start to finish

🤝 Connect you to practical help to stay independent at home

We are here for you in Powys

Please don't assume you aren't entitled to help. If you live in Powys and are of pension age, get in touch with our team today – it costs nothing to check, and it could make a massive difference to your day-to-day life.

🎶 Our Mamwlad Officer, Crystal, had the pleasure of accepting a very kind and generous donation from Edw Valley YFC Radnorshire! ✨

The wonderful young farmers raised a fantastic £323.30 from their 2025 Christmas carol-singing in their local area. 🚜🎄

This incredible donation will make a big difference in allowing us to continue to support older people in Powys, including our vital work within the farming community.

A massive thank you to everyone at Edw Valley YFC for your community spirit and hard work, and to everyone who donated – you are amazing! 💜

We’re proud to be supporting Carers Week! This year, Carers Week is all about building carer friendly communities. Carer friendly communities are places, spaces, services and community groups where unpaid carers are recognised, understood, and valued. They make support part of everyday life ensuring carers get the opportunities and help they need.

Together we’re building carer friendly communities that support carers in every area of their lives.

Get involved in by visiting https://bit.ly/4upu2i2 to find resources and information about building carer friendly communities.

Today we publish ‘Building Carer Friendly Communities: a blueprint’, setting out our vision for creating communities where unpaid carers are recognised, valued and supported.

The blueprint offers practical guidance on how to create carer friendly communities across health, social care, education, employment, business and services, and out and about in the wider community.

Find out how you and the communities you’re part of can create lasting change for unpaid carers.

Little hats, big difference
Join us to knit little hats for innocent smoothie bottles and help raise money to support older people!

Every year, an army of woolly warriors take up their knitting needles and crochet hooks as part of the innocent Big Knit in partnership with Age UK.

The Big Knit is Age UK's partnership with innocent drinks. We've been working together since 2003, asking the UK's crafters to knit little hats for the tops of innocent smoothie bottles. Every hat knitted raises 30p to help Age UK and local partners provide much-needed services and support for older people across the UK.
