Newtown Food Surplus

Newtown Food Surplus Newtown Food Surplus are a not-for-profit project tackling food surplus. We believe good food should be shared, not wasted. FAQ's 🤓

Where are you? Who is it for?

Our food shares are friendly, inclusive, and open to everyone. We operate our food shares at the Jubilee Scout Hut in Newtown (and other venues from time to time), we are open (usually) Monday and Fridays 10.30am to 11.15am but times do change and are later when we do operate from the school, do check our events page or for recent posts, as food surplus is unpredictable, we may open more or less d

epending on what comes in. Why are you doing this? Many of us are environmentalists who want to see Newtown as a pioneering town of food sustainability. Just think about all the CO2 and resources thats gone into making this food, fertilisers, water, only for it to be wasted. This has prompted us to do something bold for Newtown, to collect and redistribute as much of it as possible to avoid it from being wasted, lowering it's impact and filling . All part of the circular econmony ethos! Everyone!!! We are passionate about stopping good food from being wasted, our volunteers are collecting this surplus daily from local supermarkets. We know that this is plugging a financial gap for many so encourage people having a tough month to come during the first half hour, after that we need you anti-waste crew to get in and prevent anything left being wasted....this is a community effort. Please be aware that we are working with community groups as well, you are not taking food away from anyone. Are you a food bank? No we are not. Food surplus is very unpredictable and cannot be entirely relied upon, we may get just crates after crate after crate of mushrooms or swedes one week. Food Surplus does not address the roots of food poverty and arguably removes responsibility from the government. We are about 'food-sharing', bringing community together, using the food for positive change in the community. How much does it cost? It's 'pay as you feel', so if you're having a tough month it's free or you could donate your time and help, post and share on Facebook, it all helps. If you can afford to pay donations are very much welcome towards our running costs, help buy equipment etc and can 'pay it forward for others'. I'd like to volunteer...

Hope that info helps,

💚 FOOD SHARE DATES FOR THE REST OF JUNE 💚

A friendly reminder that our food shares continue throughout June. Don’t forget there’s an evening share at the Hanging Gardens tomorrow in Llanidloes and next Wednesday afternoon in Forden (see flyer below).

Food available varies from week to week depending on surplus donations, but there is usually a selection of fresh produce, chilled food, bakery items, frozen food and cupboard essentials. Things have been a bit different this week as we had to run all our freezers down, so the usual stock management has been disrupted.

🛍 Please bring your own bags including for bakery items
💚 Donations are appreciated but never required, this food is FREE.
🌍 Help reduce food waste.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Everyone is welcome.

🚚💚 COMMUNITY IN ACTION 💚🚚

Today was a big day for Newtown Food Surplus as we moved our entire hub operation from St Giles Business Park to our new home at Unit 15, Bear Lanes.

What could have taken our volunteer team days to achieve was completed in under 90 minutes thanks to the amazing support of Graham Ottaway Builders LTD.

They arrived with the equipment, the expertise and a 💪 team of people, and before we knew it our fridges, freezers, shelving and racking had all been safely moved and is ready for us to continue serving the community.

This wasn’t just a move. It was a community project being helped by local people who care.

Thank you, Graham, and everyone involved today. You gave up your time, brought specialist equipment, worked incredibly hard and helped make something that felt almost impossible and daunting seem effortless.

We are grateful.

Please join us in thanking Graham Ottaway Builders for helping us take this exciting next step in our journey. 👏👏👏

Apologies no sound. This is the first van load! Second with lots of frozen coming. Lots more bread. We’re emptying our freezers for the move, so please don’t hold back. Collect bread for friends and family 🙏

💚 Volunteers’ Week 2026 – Thank You 💚

As Volunteers’ Week comes to a close, we’d like to say a huge thank you to every single person who gives their time to Newtown Food Surplus.

Over the past week we’ve shared the stories of just a handful of our volunteers, but behind the scenes there are more than 70 incredible people helping to make this project possible. Whether they’re collecting food from stores, sorting deliveries, driving vans, helping at foodshares, organising paperwork, fundraising, managing our finances, every volunteer plays an important part.

Together, they help rescue tonnes of good food, reduce waste, support local households (and beyond!).

Many of our volunteers have spoken this week about the friendships they’ve made, the confidence they’ve gained, the sense of purpose volunteering has given them and the satisfaction of knowing they’re making a difference. Volunteering isn’t just about giving something back, it can be a great way to meet people, learn new skills, build confidence and become part of something positive in your local community.

If you’ve enjoyed reading these stories and would like to get involved, we’d love to hear from you. We have a wide range of volunteer roles to suit different interests, skills and availability.

We’re particularly looking for additional collection drivers to help rescue food from local stores and bring it back to the hub.

Thank you again to every volunteer, past and present, who has helped make Newtown Food Surplus what it is today.

💚 70+ volunteers. None of this happens without them

📩 If you’d like to join the team, send us a message on here or email [email protected] and we’d be happy to have a chat.

💚 Volunteers’ Week 2026 💚

As we reach the home stretch of Volunteers’ Week, and what we hope has been an enjoyable series, we’d like to introduce two of our volunteer directors, Lisa and Vicky.

Newtown Food Surplus is overseen by a team of volunteer directors who work together to ensure the organisation stays true to its mission, serves the public good and complies with the various legal, financial and governance responsibilities that come with running a community organisation.

People often imagine directors spend all their time in meetings. There are certainly a few of those! But the reality is usually very different. Alongside funding applications, policies, emails and planning, you’ll often find directors loading vans, collecting food, making deliveries, helping at foodshares and doing whatever needs doing to keep things moving.

When asked why she volunteers, Lisa’s answer came straight from the heart:

“Because I’m against food waste, to support community wellbeing and to help people in real need. I wish there had been organisations like this when my daughter was small and we were struggling.”

She added:

“It’s very rewarding.”

It’s a powerful reminder that many of us are only a few life events away from needing support ourselves, and why strong community organisations matter.

For Vicky, Newtown Food Surplus began as an environmental project with a simple aim: rescuing good food and stopping it from going to waste.

“When I discovered how much food was being wasted in Newtown, I felt compelled to do something about it. I’m an environmentalist and a humanitarian — I had to act.”

What started as a small idea soon became something much bigger.

“It’s changed my life and become a major part of it. It’s evolved into something far bigger than I ever imagined and I’ve met so many amazing people along the way who have made, and continue to make, this project what it is. It’s been wonderful hearing volunteers describe the group as a family. In our own way, we are. And I love meeting the customers, we chat and I've made even more friends!.”

She added:

“There’s a lot of sad news in the world right now. This project gives me hope for the future. It shows what a group of people who are passionate about something can achieve.”

Whether it’s collecting food, sorting crates, making deliveries, helping at foodshares, writing funding applications or planning for the future, every volunteer plays a part in making Newtown Food Surplus possible.

Later we’ll be sharing one final Volunteers’ Week post, but for now we’d like to say a huge thank you to every volunteer who gives their time, energy and kindness to this project.

💚 Could you be part of the team?

We’re always looking for new volunteers, whether you’d like to help at foodshares, collect food from stores, sort food at the hub, drive, support fundraising or lend other skills. If you’d like to get involved, we’d love to hear from you.

We have all sorts of volunteering opportunities, including:

🚐 Drivers and delivery volunteers
📦 Hub volunteers
🥕 Foodshare volunteers
🏫 School and community deliveries
💻 Behind-the-scenes support

Whether you can spare a few hours a month or a few hours a week, we’d love to hear from you.

Send us a message via Facebook or email [email protected] to find out more.

💚 Volunteers’ Week 2026 💚

Meet Heulwen. After recently retiring, Heulwen wanted to take on a voluntary role within a community-based organisation. Following a couple of conversations with Marilyn (Director), she agreed to become one of our volunteer drivers.

One of the things Heulwen enjoys most about volunteering is meeting people. “I enjoy meeting new people, especially at the hub and even at the stores.” As a driver, she gets a unique perspective on the scale of food being rescued across the area.

“It’s amazing to pick up so much food and more often than not my 4x4 vehicle is full.”
Heulwen also spoke about the friendships and conversations that have become part of her volunteering experience. “Jonathan and Jess are my regular hub unloaders and we have lots of great conversation.”

Like many of our volunteers, what stands out most to Heulwen is seeing good food put to good use. “It’s so good to see generally good quality food going to people with a real need.”

Thank you, Heulwen, for helping rescue food, support local people and for being such a valued member of the team. 💚

If you’d like to find out more about volunteering with us, send us a message via Facebook or email [email protected].

We’d love to hear from you.

💚 Volunteers’ Week 2026 💚

Today we’d like you to meet Jo.

Jo joined Newtown Food Surplus in September and has quickly become a much-loved member of the team. When asked what she enjoys most about volunteering, her answer was simple:

“It’s like a nice little family.”

Before becoming a volunteer, Jo had visited our foodshares with her children, so she already knew a little about what we do. What she didn’t expect was how much volunteering would help her personally. Jo spoke openly about struggling with her mental health, anxiety and confidence.

“It’s really helped with my confidence and everything because I’ve been struggling a lot with my mental health, anxiety and things like that, We all help each other along. It’s really nice.”

Anxiety affects millions of people across the UK, and many of us will experience times in our lives when confidence feels difficult to find. That’s why we’re especially grateful to Jo for being willing to share her experience so openly.

When asked what she would say to someone who is thinking about volunteering but feeling unsure, Jo didn’t hesitate.

“Go for it. It really did help me. It gives you a bit more of a purpose in life. It gives you a little routine as well, which people who are struggling with mental health and anxiety need.”

And for anyone worried about taking that first step?

“It’s hard at first, but give it a couple of weeks and you’ll find it just fits into your normal routine at home.”

Thank you, Jo, not only for everything you do, but also for sharing your story so honestly. We know your words will help and encourage others who may be facing similar challenges and wondering whether volunteering could be the first step towards something positive. 💚

If you'd like to find out more about volunteering with Newtown Food Surplus, send us a message via Facebook or email [email protected].

💚 HELP US BRING OUR NEW HUB TO LIFE 💚

As many of you know, we’re moving into our new home at Bear Lanes. It’s a fantastic opportunity for Newtown Food Surplus, but there’s still plenty to do before we’re fully up and running.

We’ve already had some amazing support.

🔧 EOM Ltd have donated their time and expertise to help us get the electrics sorted.

🚚 Graham Ottaway Builders are kindly organising a team to help move us from St Giles.

💚 Newtown Town Council have helped fund essential equipment for the new hub.

As always, it’s people and local businesses making things happen.

If you, your employer or your business would like to get involved, we’d love to hear from you.

We’re looking for all sorts of support, including:

• Trades and practical skills
• Sign writing, printing and window graphics
• Tables and chairs
• Cleaning equipment and supplies (Eco cleaning products)
• Office supplies
• Freestanding Food Display Stands
• Fundraising for us via workplace challenges or sponsored events

Maybe you have equipment sitting unused.

Maybe your team would like to take on a fundraising challenge.

Maybe you have skills, materials or expertise that could help.

No pressure and no expectation, but if you’d like to be part of bringing Bear Lanes to life, please get in touch.

📧 [email protected]

or message us through Facebook.

This project belongs to the community and, like everything we’ve achieved so far, it will only happen because people come together and make it happen.

🍎🍌🥐 Supporting the Caterpillar Feast Big Lunch 🦋

We thought we’d share a little glimpse of some of the surplus food heading to Saturday’s Big Lunch, organised by Cultivate

Thanks to our supermarket partners and volunteers, we’ve been able to set aside:

🍎 Crates of apples
🍌 Bananas
🍊 Oranges
🍓 Berries
🍑 Apricots
🥐 Pastries and croissants
🍩 Doughnuts
🧁 Cakes and sweet treats
🥖 Bread rolls and bakery items

Food that might otherwise have gone to waste will instead be enjoyed by local families coming together for a lovely community event.

A special thank you to Kinga again, who coordinated the food allocation and made sure everything was ready to support the day whilst also ensuring food continues out to shares and community partners, she's a ⭐️.

If you’re looking for something to do on Saturday, we’d thoroughly recommend popping along. It looks set to be a wonderful event with activities, stories, food and plenty of family fun.

We love seeing good food shared, not wasted, why not share some photos of your picnic with us, we'd love to see! 💚
