The Womens' Institute is 111 years old on 16th September 2026. In celebration of this event, The WI (National Federation of Women's Institutes) has asked WI groups to celebrate by wearing purple clothing (one of the colours of the Suffragette movement) and having photographs taken. These are the photos of our ladies from Meltham Moorlands WI. The one of Christine Westcott (President), Kate Schofield (Acting Treasurer) and Jo Parish (Secretary) represents the number of years of the anniversary - 111.

Our meeting on 1st September featured a talk from John Halstead from Woodhead Mountain Rescue. He and his colleagues, David and Maddie, gave a riveting talk on their past rescues, their training and their equipment and answered the many questions our group had. The ladies were extremely appreciative of all that these brave volunteers (and their counterparts from other Mountain Rescue Services) do to keep the public safe in all sorts of circumstances.

Today, Christine, Elaine and I took a trip to the Pennine Domestic Abuse Partnership office to drop off the generous donations our wonderful WI members have contributed recently. They were gratefully received. We will continue to support this very well worthwhile charity.

Our Meeting on 4th August was a celebration of Yorkshire Day. We enjoyed contributions of roast beef and Yorkshire puddings, Parkin, cakes, curd tart, pontefract cakes, Wensleydale cheese, Yorkshire mixture and rhubarb and custard sweets. Kate had set a challenge of a list of song titles to be included in Yorkshire stories and several ladies regaled us with their amusing creations. The evening concluded with a couple of quizzes to keep the brain cells going!

At our July meeting Members were truly entertained by author, Simon Michael, who shared many stories of his life as a barrister in London and his wonderful novels based on the cases he defended. The ladies then had a chance to purchase personally signed copies of his books. A lovely evening.

Christine Westcott (Meltham Moorlands WI President) and myself attended the The West Yorkshire Federation of Women's Institutes AGM in Leeds on Saturday. A very enjoyable day that not only covered Federation business but also interesting stalls, competitions, raffles and, of course, two Speakers. The morning Speaker was author, Frances Brody , who spoke about her journey as a writer. The afternoon Speaker was Lesley Smith, historian, who gave a hilarious talk on S*x and the Tudors (in full Tudor dress). This elicited great interest and just goes to show that WI ladies are not prudish fuddy duddies!!

The Members’ meeting this April was a craft evening where Penny Barker helped us all to make a cathedral window design pin cushion. Some of us were more skilled than others but much fun ensued helping each other out!
