Christine Westcott (Meltham Moorlands WI President) and myself attended the The West Yorkshire Federation of Women's Institutes AGM in Leeds on Saturday. A very enjoyable day that not only covered Federation business but also interesting stalls, competitions, raffles and, of course, two Speakers. The morning Speaker was author, Frances Brody , who spoke about her journey as a writer. The afternoon Speaker was Lesley Smith, historian, who gave a hilarious talk on S*x and the Tudors (in full Tudor dress). This elicited great interest and just goes to show that WI ladies are not prudish fuddy duddies!!

The Members’ meeting this April was a craft evening where Penny Barker helped us all to make a cathedral window design pin cushion. Some of us were more skilled than others but much fun ensued helping each other out!

Our March meeting Speaker was Mairi Mackay, who took us on a whirlwind tour of some fascinating places during her ‘Quirky Scotland’ talk. From Harris Tweed to the Corryvreckan Whirlpool, from Ailsa Craig, famous for the curling stone granites to the Orkney Italian Chapel, from the Highland Clearances and the 2nd Duke of Sutherland, to the modern day wonder of the Falkirk Wheel, every accompanying photo and video told the story of this wonderful land.

What a treat for our first meeting of 2026! Denise Adlard came to talk to us about Patrick and Maria Bronte - the parents of the Bronte sisters. She revealed how Maria from Penzance met Patrick, who was living in Yorkshire, and their life together. Patrick was determined to improve the life of his parishioners in unsanitary Haworth and worked with Benjamin Babbage, public health specialist, to bring clean water to the village. Patrick was very keen that his daughters should be well educated and had the same chances as any man. Maria, unfortunately died young of cancer and her sister came from Penzance to nurse her in her final months, and staying for 21 years to help bring up the children.
The fascinating story of the lives of the Bronte family can be found in many publications, some of which Denise displayed for us, along with photos of the family.

We had a wonderful time at our Christmas lunch today. The food and service at Meltham Golf Club was very good and there was lots of chat and laughter. Kate tested our festive knowledge on Christmas songs and movies and Jo gave an amusing rendition of the Twelve Days of Christmas and a Christmas poem. There was a raffle and everyone had a party bag!

The theme for our last Members’ meeting was ‘Bystanders can be Lifesavers’, this year’s WI Campaign. Our Secretary talked through the topic with Members and then we watched a video demonstration of CPR and the use of a defibrillator. We had a defibrillator at the meeting so that Members could familiarise themselves with it’s use. Members were also encouraged to do the online RevivR training with the British Heart Foundation. Then Members were invited to practice their CPR skills with cushions! Members commented on how much harder and faster the action was than they expected. It was a very worthwhile evening!
