UACES (University Association for Contemporary European Studies), alongside the Political Studies Association (PSA) and the British International Studies Association (BISA), has written to the University of Dundee urging it to reconsider proposed redundancies affecting Politics and International Relations.

The Politics and International Relations team at Dundee is highly regarded across our discipline. Despite its small size, the team has a strong reputation for excellent teaching, innovative interdisciplinary programmes, impactful research and outstanding student support.

We are deeply concerned by proposals that place the entire team at risk of redundancy and would suspend the MSc International Relations programme. Given the team's contributions to teaching, research and initiatives such as the Scottish Human Rights Defender Fellowship, we urge the University to work with staff and students to find a way forward that avoids compulsory redundancies and protects opportunities to study Politics and International Relations at Dundee in the future.

UACES 57th Annual Conference is Heading to Bordeaux

We're delighted to announce that the UACES 57th Annual Conference will take place at ESSCA School of Management in Bordeaux, France, from 30 August to 1 September 2027.

Hosted by the EU*Asia Institute at ESSCA, the conference will bring the UACES community to one of France's most vibrant and internationally connected cities. With its rich heritage, strong academic environment and excellent transport links, Bordeaux provides an inspiring setting for European Studies scholars from around the world to connect, collaborate and share research.

ESSCA has long been an active supporter of UACES and the wider European Studies community, with colleagues from the EU*Asia Institute contributing to the association through research, conference participation and service over many years.

From 7–9 September, scholars, researchers and practitioners from across the world will come together at Charles University for three days of panels, plenaries, networking and discussion on the latest developments in European Studies.

UACES (University Association for Contemporary European Studies), alongside the Political Studies Association and the British International Studies Association, has written to the University of Lincoln urging it to reconsider proposed redundancies affecting Politics and International Relations.

The Politics and International Relations team at Lincoln is held in high regard across our discipline. Ranked 7th for Politics in The Guardian subject rankings this year, the team has developed a distinctive reputation for research-led teaching, outstanding student satisfaction and innovative initiatives such as its long-running Parliamentary Studies module delivered in partnership with the UK Parliament.

We are deeply concerned by proposals that place the whole Politics and International Relations team at risk of redundancy. The potential loss of staff would have significant implications for students, postgraduate supervision, research activity and the future of programmes that have become a recognised strength of the University.

Lincoln's Politics and International Relations team has made an important contribution to the academic community through leadership in our learned societies, engagement with Parliament and policymakers, and a commitment to providing students with applied learning opportunities, including Model United Nations and Model NATO.

At a time when growing numbers of young people are studying Politics and engaging with global issues, we believe there is a strong case for building on these achievements. We urge the University to work with staff and students to find a way forward that avoids compulsory redundancies and protects opportunities for future generations of Politics and International Relations students.

We are pleased to share a new blog from Oana Borlea-Stancioi, reflecting on her experiences conducting ethnographic fieldwork in rural Romania with the support of a UACES Fieldwork Scholarship.

In this thoughtful post, Oana explores how anthropologists navigate the relationship between personal experience and academic research. Drawing on her fieldwork in villages often described as places where people still live "like a hundred years ago", she reflects on the importance of reflexivity, positionality and challenging preconceived assumptions in the research process.

We look forward to seeing how Oana's research continues to develop.

UACES alongside the Political Studies Association and the British International Studies Association, has written to the University of Exeter urging it to reconsider proposed redundancies affecting Politics and International Relations.

The University of Exeter has established an international reputation for excellence in Politics and International Relations, combining world-leading research, interdisciplinary collaboration, strong student demand and outstanding graduate outcomes.

We are concerned that the scale of the proposed changes risks undermining a thriving academic community, with potential consequences for students, staff, research capacity and the future development of the discipline.

At a time when interest in politics, international affairs and global challenges continues to grow, we believe universities should be investing in these areas and the opportunities they create for students, society and the wider economy.
