Hope is when a stranger becomes a friend - here at STAR, our student volunteers use their compassion, kindness and openness to take action throughout the year, both on and off campuses. Their action helps ensure that communities feel welcoming and have a friendly face, that everyone can feel like they truly belong. Because there's no such thing as a stranger - you just haven't said hello yet.

What does hope mean to you?

This week’s Simple Act is Get Drawing and Painting!

Drawing and painting can be a great way to express ourselves, have a quiet moment alone, or come together with others and get creative. You don’t have to be an expert to create something beautiful, there are plenty of simple ways to get creative:

Ways to act simply:

- Create a painting or drawing exploring Courage, the theme of Refugee Week 2026
- Host a painting/drawing night with friends or in your community, inspired by the theme of Courage
- Organise an exhibition inspired by the theme of Courage and showcase local artists and creatives.

Head to the website to see more about this week's simple act https://refugeeweek.org/simple-acts/

In under 2 weeks Teigan, STAR's Student Network and Volunteering Coordinator, is running the Bristol Half Marathon and fundraising for STAR!

You can help make Teigan’s training and those sore legs even more worthwhile by sponsoring her so she can reach (and hopefully exceed!) her fundraising target (and you don’t even have to break a sweat!).

If you would like to support Teigan and STAR you can donate here or via the link in our bio: https://ajbellgreatbristolrun2026.enthuse.com/pf/teigan-couper?utm_source=enthuse&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=f-Bristgrowth&utm_content=BrisGroURL

GOOD LUCK TEIGAN😀

P.S Feeling inspired?
We are always grateful to those who decide to take on challenges like this and dedicate their hard work to raise money for STAR.
If you are currently training for a marathon, half marathon, 5KM or a walk or are inspired to train for one and would like to support the work that STAR does, please email us at [email protected] for more information on how you can do so!

This is what welcome looks like.

Every day, students across the country come together and show their solidarity, love, and support with their STAR group to people from refugee and asylum seeking backgrounds.

Through volunteering projects, collecting messages of welcome, bake sales, information stalls, open days, workshops, campaign work, potlucks, music events, football tournaments, film nights, leafleting, and so much more. The STAR student network shows what coming together as a community and showing solidarity can be.

Today is also National Volunteer day, so thank YOU to all the STAR volunteers who power this movement of welcome in your universities and communities across the UK.

With your support, student groups can continue the incredible work they are doing and the network can continue to grow. You can DOUBLE your donation and DOUBLE your impact until midday on Tuesday 9th December by donating through the link in our bio.
