Grappling With Life CIC

Grappling With Life CIC Grappling With Life is a non-profit organisation. Enhanced DBS Our goal is to help at-risk youth to learn and improve in the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Our vision is to use BJJ to help build up resilient young people ready to handle life’s physical, social and mental health challenges, in a world of growing social and economic disparity. Hi, I'm Christopher Tulloch the founder of Grappling With Life a Community Interest Company based in the London borough of Newham. Grappling With Life is a non-profit organisation focused on working with children

and young people who face disadvantages and live in urban communities, through the teaching of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and other martial arts and mentoring programmes. We believe that doing so will also improve their physical and mental health, support cognitive development and teach them the values of discipline, respect and perseverance.

We’re proud to share this update from our founder, Chris Tulloch.

Grappling With Life CIC has been awarded partial funding through People Powered Places for our Martial Arts and Mentoring project, after receiving 244 votes from the local community.

This support means a great deal to us. As a small CIC, every vote, share, conversation and message of encouragement helps us keep building.

Thank you to everyone who backed the project and helped us reach this point. We’re excited to keep working towards bringing accessible Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, mentoring and positive opportunities to young people in Newham.

Consistency makes a big difference when learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

One session a week is a great start. But when children train more than once a week, they have more of a chance to practise, remember the skills they have learned, and build confidence.

BJJ is learned through repetition, live practice, and problem-solving. The more consistently children train, the more they retain and the more confident they become in using their Jiu-Jitsu when it matters most.

We know it can be difficult to commit to two sessions a week, so to help, we are offering a 20% discount for children who train twice a week.

That means two sessions for £8 a week instead of £10.

With just two sessions left before the half-term break, this is a great chance for the children to finish strong. Consistency makes a real difference in Jiu-Jitsu. The more regularly children train, the more confident they become, the better they remember techniques, and the more they learn to stay calm and focused when things feel difficult.
Let’s make the most of these final sessions before the break.

What’s next for Grappling With Life?

We’re continuing to grow our children’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu sessions in Newham and build a safe, positive space where young people can develop confidence, resilience, discipline and self-control.

We are also looking to do more work with schools, PRUs, alternative provision settings and community organisations, so we can reach more young people who would benefit from structured physical activity, mentoring and trusted support.

The aim has always been bigger than just learning techniques.

It’s about helping young people feel stronger, more capable, and better able to deal with challenges on and off the mats.

Classes are open to ages 7–14 at Britannia Village Hall.
