Something worth sharing with your child's school this week.
UK rivers and lakes stay below 15 degrees all year round. Even in August. Most teenagers have no idea. Most adults don't either.
Cold water shock is the body's immediate, uncontrollable response to cold water immersion. It hits within three seconds. Your body gasps before your brain can react. If your head is underwater when that happens, you breathe water straight in. It doesn't matter how well you can swim. It doesn't discriminate.
Most teenagers who die in open water die within the first ten minutes. Not from hypothermia. From cold shock, before anyone can reach them.
The Institute of Humanitarian Action has just launched a free 15-minute assembly on cold water shock, built specifically for young people aged 10 to 19. Any teacher or youth leader can download it right now at www.apiha.org, with no sign-up and no cost. Speaker notes included, ready to deliver this week.
If your child's school hasn't covered this, please share this post with their teacher, their head of year, or your local school Facebook group. It takes 15 minutes to deliver and it could save a life this summer.
