LSW Art Outing 🎨

We spent the day at the Barbican visiting two fantastic exhibitions.

Delcy Morelos: origo is an extraordinary immersive installation made from soil, clay, hay and fragrant spices. Walking through its dark, earth-lined passages is a powerful sensory experience that invites you to reconnect with the materiality of the ground beneath our feet. It’s free to visit and finishes 31 July, so catch it while you can.

We also visited Liam Young: In Other Worlds, an immersive exhibition exploring speculative futures through film, architecture, costume, sound and large-scale installations. Thought-provoking, visually stunning and full of ideas about climate, technology and how we might imagine better futures.

Two very different exhibitions, but both incredibly inspiring. One looks back to our origins in the earth, the other asks us to imagine where we’re going next.

A brilliant day out with the London Sculpture Workshop team. Highly recommended.

A few favourites from this week’s bronze casting course. From playful experiments and relief plaques to figurative studies, every piece tells a different story and reflects the maker behind it.

It’s always rewarding to see wax models transformed into solid bronze, then brought to life through chasing, finishing and patination.

Looking forward to sharing more casts from this group over the coming days.

Bronze casting is always full of surprises, and seeing these pieces emerge from the shell never gets old.

From dip to dewax.

Layer by layer the ceramic shell builds, before the wax disappears and the cast moves one step closer to bronze. The slow-motion dewax never gets old.

Day One of our Bronze Casting Course.

Today we began by exploring wax and its relationship to heat. Students experimented with melting, softening, and manipulating casting wax, discovering how temperature affects its behaviour and how it can be used to create both precise forms and more organic structures.

From folded and constructed forms to found textures and experimental assemblies, the workshop quickly became a space for investigation and making. Understanding the material at this stage is fundamental to the lost-wax casting process, where every mark and decision made in wax will eventually translate into bronze.

A fantastic first day with a great group, and we’re looking forward to seeing these ideas develop over the coming days as they move through mould-making, ceramic shell, and ultimately the bronze pour.

Our new plasma-cutting PPE has landed and we’re already impressed.

The ESAB air-fed setup combines the Savage A50 LUX welding helmet with the EPR-X1.1 powered air respirator, giving clear visibility, all-day comfort, and a constant supply of filtered air when plasma cutting, grinding, and fabricating.

For a busy workshop environment like London Sculpture Workshop, it’s a big step forward in improving user comfort and reducing exposure to fumes and airborne particulates.

Fresh from the shell room.

Not ancient tools, but a fresh batch of student bronzes emerging from their ceramic shells. We’re busy knocking out, cleaning up and revealing the results from our latest bronze casting course as we get ready to welcome the next cohort starting next week.

There’s always something special about seeing these pieces for the first time after the pour — each one a surprise, and the beginning of the chasing and finishing process.
