Close Encounters of the Clay Kind – Day Two

The mountain continues to evolve.

Over the weekend, visitors of all ages have been adding their own marks, textures and discoveries to this growing communal sculpture. What began as a simple structure has become a shared landscape shaped by many hands and imaginations.

This playful homage to Close Encounters of the Third Kind is still underway, so there’s still time to come and leave your mark.

Join us at Thames-Side Studios and help shape whatever emerges next.

Close Encounters of the Clay Kind 👽 – Day One Complete

The mountain grows.

What started as a framework this morning has become a monumental communal sculpture, shaped by dozens of hands throughout the first day of Thames-Side Studios Open Weekend.

A playful homage to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, this evolving clay landscape continues tomorrow. There’s still time to leave your mark and become part of the story.

Join us for Part Two tomorrow and help shape what happens next.

Post 3: Air, fire, metal. Repeat.

Back to basics casting with — a blower, a stack of old bricks, scrap metal and a bit of patience.

No induction furnace. No digital controls. Just understanding heat, airflow and when the metal tells you it’s ready. 🔥

Sometimes the simplest setups teach the most.

Back to basics. Fire, air, metal.
This weekend we’ve been stripping metal casting back to its essentials with friends at Our Creative Nature — improvised furnaces, charcoal, simple tools and molten metal under open skies.

There’s something important in remembering that casting doesn’t always start with expensive equipment; it starts with curiosity, experimentation and learning through making.

From raw material to pour, slowing things down and reconnecting with process. 🔥⚒️

Thanks to everyone getting their hands dirty with us.
