A huge well done to all our 2026 Advance Leadership participants for completing their three-day residential in Sheffield!

Last week we welcomed the cohort for three days of learning, reflection and professional development.

From building an anti-racist service to balancing leadership and management under reform pressure, to considering what mindsets enable transformational conversations, leaders had the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals in the sector and strengthen their leadership practice.

A huge thank you to our facilitators Adéwale Adeniji, Nimal Jude, Tom Savory, Niketa Sanderson-Gillard, Ryan Wise, Emily Sweetman for creating such a supportive and thought-provoking learning environment.

Advance Leadership brings together heads of service and managers in children’s services to build confidence in decision-making, strengthen inclusive and anti-racist leadership and learn alongside peers from across the country.

We are still smiling from our graduation in October, where this cohort of Approach Social Work participants became newly qualified social workers and joined the Frontline Fellowship.

At a time when children are facing unprecedented challenges, having more social workers on the ground has never been more critical.

We can’t wait to celebrate again when our next cohort graduates in April, ready to start their journey supporting children across the country!

Four years ago, Dilhan took a chance on a career he had never considered. Today he is an experienced, qualified social worker and supports others at the very start of their social work career.

Here's what keeps him going:

"My favourite aspect of social work is getting to meet and work closely with families needing support in a direct and tangible capacity.

“It's a privilege to be let into people's homes and learn about their lives. Social workers are well placed to link up different services to make real positive change."

This , we are celebrating social workers like Dilhan and the incredible work they do.

Children across the country need people who believe things can be better. Social workers and professionals who work with young people act on this belief every single day.

All our programmes and training are also built on this belief. This means staying curious and open. Believing that adversity does not define a child's future. Leading with empathy. Building confidence and humility in equal measure. And partnering with families, because partnership is where real change begins.

Ian was a teacher, but a desire to work with the challenges he saw in the classroom led him into social work.

After joining the Frontline programme (now Approach Social Work), he discovered a way of learning that worked for him - hands-on and focused on supporting children at risk of harm from day one.

“I just loved it when I got on the course. That kind of on-the-job training definitely worked for me.”

The transition from child to adult services can be a critical and unsettling time, particularly for care-experienced young people with a learning disability, mental health challenges, autism or physical impairments.

Join our next Frontline Talks on 27 March 2026 to learn about the challenges young people face and how you can better support them through this critical transition.

We'll be joined by Shared Lives Plus, a charity reimagining the way care is delivered for young people. Their programme offers a stable, supportive home environment that provides continuity and belonging at exactly the moment young people need it most.

During the session, you will also hear directly from Vicky, Gracie and Katie, care-experienced ambassadors for the programme.

Celebrating three years of the Step Forward programme. What a journey it has been.

As we come to the end of the programme this month, we are proud to reflect on the participants’ growth, leadership and community it has fostered.

Over 150 early career social workers took part across three cohorts, each gaining confidence and stronger leadership skills, to support children and young people at risk of harm.

We are grateful to the Garfield Weston Foundation, whose generous funding made this programme possible over the past three years.

While Step Forward has now reached its conclusion, Frontline’s commitment to developing leadership skills in the sector continues.

Changing lives

Frontline is a social work charity working to ensure that all children in England have a safe and stable home, and that their life chances are not limited by their social or family circumstance.

We create social change for these children and their families by developing excellent social work practice and leadership through our programmes. We are also building a movement of leaders in social work and broader society as part of our Fellowship.

In order to achieve this, we aim to have 4,000 impactful fellows by 2025.

One of the ways we are working towards this mission is by recruiting and developing high potential graduates to join the social work profession through the Frontline programme. These individuals will provide life-changing support to those who need it most.
