"At the age of 16, I'd written in my personal statement that I wanted to become a social worker. Thirty years later, I remembered that dream. I'd always wanted to do it. Life just took a different turn."

Through Approach Social Work, Jazz was able to retrain and qualify as a children's social worker, allowing her to finally follow her dream.

She's already making a difference.

"I got a compliment from our Head of Service because I'd engaged a family who hadn't engaged with social workers for nearly 20 years. I worked with them with cultural humility, really understanding their barriers, and it worked."

For anyone wondering if it's too late to follow a long-held dream, Jazz has some reassuring words: "I was really worried about my age, but age isn’t a barrier."

Four years ago, Dilhan took a chance on a career he had never considered. Today he is an experienced, qualified social worker and supports others at the very start of their social work career.

Here's what keeps him going:

"My favourite aspect of social work is getting to meet and work closely with families needing support in a direct and tangible capacity.

“It's a privilege to be let into people's homes and learn about their lives. Social workers are well placed to link up different services to make real positive change."

What if a cooking club could help young people in care prepare for independence?

That's the idea Geraldo is developing through Frontline's Innovation programme.

Before becoming a social worker, Geraldo worked as a chef. Now, he's exploring how cooking can help children and young people in care build confidence, develop practical life skills and connect with one another.

"A young person once told me chicken breast was too expensive. We talked about buying a whole chicken instead and how far it could go. That's when I realised there must be so many other young people facing the same challenge."

Innovation often starts with a simple idea like this. Frontline's Innovation programme supports professionals who work with children to develop and test these ideas; ideas which use their unique insight to improve outcomes for children at risk of harm.

We'll be supporting Geraldo as he continues to develop his project.

Grace is one of those young people who leaves a lasting impression. She's using her experience of the care system to influence change and improve the lives of children and young people in care today.

Last May, she was one of three winners of the Frontline Award for Young People, recognising the difference she's making.

"Winning this award means I can use my voice to advocate for young people who don't really get to use theirs every day. And I feel like I can become a role model for so many people who need it."

Grace said she was "over the moon" when she found out she'd been nominated.

When asked what she'd say to her younger self, Grace said:

"I would tell her to keep being optimistic and to keep having hope because life does get better. I think it's so important that she holds on to the bright side of things because things will get better."

Ian never expected social work to open so many doors.

After graduating from Approach Social Work (known as the Frontline programme at the time), he discovered a profession that offered more opportunities than he'd ever imagined. Each new role challenged him in different ways and revealed another side of social work.

One of the best parts of delivering training is seeing what happens when professionals have the time and space to learn together.

People challenge each other's thinking. They share ideas that have worked in their teams. They talk honestly about what's difficult. And they leave with new perspectives they can take back into their practice.

We love seeing professionals who make time to invest in their own development, because that investment doesn’t stop with them. It strengthens teams, improves practice and ultimately helps children and families receive the support they deserve.
