No one plans to get injured or ill, and nobody can predict a mental health battle that could end their career - this is what makes leaving the Armed Forces through medical discharge even harder, there is little time to plan.
When you know your service only has a few years left, or you choose to hand your papers in, you can plan ahead and make the necessary changes and savings needed to step into civvy street as prepared as possible. But when injury and illness strike, your career can be cut short, leaving you little time to plan and adjust - all while trying to adapt and come to terms with your sudden change in health and challenges that this brings.
This is the driving force behind SWV, the purpose of the charity - to support Veterans facing this exact situation - their career cut short and taken away due to injury, illness and mental health challenges.
This is when support is needed most, to help each individual navigate the obstacles that come with being medically discharged while learning to manage new health challenges. Help for each individual to find a new career path that they can build on and will sustain them, to be supported as they adjust and head into the civilian job market as well as supporting them with their pain limitations and mental health management tools too.
