🖊️Email your MP to ask them to attend the debate this Thursday and help put a stop to UK trade with Israel's illegal settlements. 

The ever-expanding settlements built on Palestinian homes and land, are widely accepted as illegal under international law. Yet trade with companies linked to these settlements, continues. The UK government has repeatedly condemned the settlements but must take concrete steps against them. Stopping this trade is the bare minimum required to ending UK complicity in the daily crimes being committed against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Educator and activist John Mussington, on the fight to defend land rights on Barbuda.

Last week The Barbuda Council and GLAN hosted a community meeting to discuss land rights and the current challenges facing the island. Leslie Thomas KC shared an update on the current cases being taken to protect peoples homes, communal access to beaches, and areas of natural and cultural significance under threat from foreign property developers building luxury resorts for ultra-wealthy tourists, at the expense of the community and Barbuda's precious ecosystems. John Mussington, one of the claimants in a case fighting the development of an additional airport built on pristine forest, gave a rallying speech sharing that although these cases are being taken by individuals this is a community-wide issues, and each case affects the rights and future of every Barbudan as well as the delicate natural environment. Charlotte Andrews Briscoe, Lawyer at GLAN, shared recent successes in legal fights by community activists around the world to protect land rights and the environment, and emphasised that despite many challenges the collective effort to defend land rights is vital and effective.

The Barbuda Council responds to news reports of the Central Government's attempt to take Barbudan land into their ownership - stripping Barbudans of their long-held right to communal land ownership and management.

The project, which is backed by the current ruling government, was designed without any consultation with or consent from Barbudans - big developers and their networks stand to profit at the expense of the environment and local people.

The case is ongoing in the courts and subject to legal challenge by the Barbuda Council.

Barbudan land defenders John Mussington and Jackie Frank were in court yesterday for the full hearing of their case challenging the Antigua and Barbuda authorities over the development of the damaging additional airport on the island.

‼️The strength of their case was evident during the hearing, with the defendant authorities admitting that they unlawfully failed to consult the public on the building of the airport.

Jackie shared how they were both feeling post-court, saying, “Based on the conversations, discussions, information shared today we remain confident that the judgment will favour Barbuda and us”.

‼️Environmental assessment failures

There were multiple key failures identified by independent scientific experts, in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) documents which were retrospectively provided to support the airport’s development.

These fundamental flaws matter particularly in the case of Barbuda, a low-lying hurricane prone island with a fragile ecosystem that relies on natural barriers such as mangroves and other coastal vegetation for protection from storm surges. The EIA made no mention of the history of hurricanes and the possibility of extreme events and failed to provide meteorological data.

‼️One independent expert consulted stated the EIA documents were “of unusually poor quality. They fail to adhere to some of the most basic practices that are required for scientific credibility”
