🇷🇴📚 A Powerful Step Forward for the Romanian Community in the UK 🇬🇧
Romanian is the second most spoken foreign language in the UK
On 27 April 2026, an important meeting at Westminster took place to support the introduction of Romanian as a GCSE subject — a much-needed recognition for one of the most widely spoken community languages in the United Kingdom.
The event brought together politicians, educators, cultural leaders, community representatives, parents, and young Romanians and British Romanians, all united by the belief that Romanian GCSE is essential for future generations.
Supporting this initiative were Dr Tessa Dunlop, Associate Professor at UCL SSEES Ramona Gonczol, Harrow West Labour Party MP Gareth Thomas, Romania’s Ambassador to the UK Laura Popescu, Consul General of Romania in London Robert D Marin, Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova Ruslan Bolbocean, Romanian Cultural Institute in London Director Aura Woodward, Dr David Webster, fouder of UK Romania Business, Former UK Ambassador to Romania Andrew Noble LVO, Labour MP for Walthamstow Stella Creasy, Conservatives MP Droitwich and Eversham Nigel Huddleston, Helen Hayes, Harriett Baldwin, Caroline Nokes, Mark Sewards, Tonia Antoniazzi, Sir Stephen Timms, Matt Turmaine, Warinder Juss, alongside many other supporters, public figures, faith representatives, community members, Romanian charity organisations in the UK, teachers, parents, and young people who raised their voices for greater educational inclusion and cultural recognition.
The meeting aimed to build momentum, raise awareness among policymakers, and highlight the importance of introducing Romanian GCSE within the British education system. Romanian is already one of the most spoken foreign languages in England and Wales, yet young people still do not have the opportunity to formally study and be examined in their mother tongue through GCSE qualifications.
For many young Romanians and British Romanians, this campaign is about much more than education. It is about identity, belonging, language, cultural heritage, and ensuring future generations feel recognised and represented within British society.
