What type of charity shop shopper are you?

The list maker? The bargain hunter? The treasure hunter? Or the chaos shopper who came in for one thing and somehow left with a bag full of everything?

If you already love a charity shop, you know the feeling.

But if charity shops aren't usually your thing, why not give them a go this September?

St Luke's is joining Second Hand September - a month-long movement encouraging people to choose second-hand over new, helping to reduce waste and give pre-loved things another life.

The idea is simple: before you buy something new, have a look second-hand first.

You might find exactly what you're looking for. You might discover something you didn't know you needed. Or you might leave empty-handed and try again another day.

And when you shop at St Luke’s, your purchase helps fund hospice care for local people across Harrow and Brent.

Staff from RDP Newmans, a Harrow-based accountancy business, visited St Luke’s at Kenton Grange today to present us with a cheque for an incredible £18,200, raised through their Nine Bridges Challenge last month.

More than 40 colleagues completed the walk in memory of Sarah Perez, wife of RDP Newmans partner Lyndon Perez, who received care from St Luke’s before she died last year.

During their visit to Kenton Grange, the team learned how their fundraising will support palliative and end of life care across Harrow and Brent. Our Chief Executive, Jo Pearce, thanked them for their remarkable commitment, kindness and generosity.

The team also saw the sound therapy equipment made possible by an earlier donation from Lyndon. This now allows us to hold special sound therapy sessions in Sarah’s memory.

Our heartfelt thanks to everyone at RDP Newmans and to the 216 individual donors who supported their challenge.

Cheese, wine and a great time. How does that sound?
👇
On Wednesday 16 September, Mouse & Grape are hosting a Charity Cheese & Wine Tasting Evening, with every ticket sold supporting our work caring for people with life-limiting illnesses across Harrow and Brent.

You can expect a proper tasting evening, including:

🧀 4 expertly paired artisan cheeses
🍷 Great wine to match
- Chutney and crackers
- Expert guidance on flavour, pairing, and how to recreate it at home

The event is being organised by Jessica Summer, who has a personal connection to the Hospice:

"St Luke's cared for both of my grandfathers, Leonard Summer and Gerald Petrook, in 2007 and 2022. The care they received was incredible, but what stood out most was the support shown to our family during some of the most difficult moments of our lives. Those experiences have stayed with us and inspired us to give back to an organisation that means so much to local families."

Don't miss out - Places are limited. Book your ticket today: https://www.mouseandgrape.com/product/charity-cheese-wine-tasting-event-for-stlukes-hospice-160926

This is a rewarding experience, as one of our volunteers shared:

“I saw a leaflet about the new shop, and I thought, what a nice thing to do. I’ve met so many wonderful people over the years, and it’s incredibly rewarding.”

Your time and support will help us raise vital funds for St Luke’s Hospice and make a real difference to the lives of the people we support.

Do you know what should – and shouldn’t – be donated to a charity shop? And what happens to the clothes that can’t be sold?

As part of our Bag Your Rag campaign, we invited Ian Newton from ELT Global to our warehouse in Wealdstone. ELT buys and collects textiles from our shops, and Ian spoke to our Head of Retail, Claire Stockman, about what happens to donated clothing once it leaves our shops.

Here are some key things to keep in mind when you’re having a clear-out:

👉 Good-quality, clean and dry clothes can often be given a second life. If they can't be sold in our shops, they may still be collected by ELT Global for reuse elsewhere.

👉 Stained, wet, soiled or heavily damaged clothing usually can’t be reused or recycled and should not be included in your donation.

👉 Unusable donations also come at a cost. Sorting and disposing of items that cannot be reused takes time and money – resources that could otherwise support our hospice care.

👉 Please don’t leave donations outside our shops. Items left outside are treated as contaminated and are not suitable for sale or reuse.

Read the full article on our website to find out more about what happens to your donations and how you can help us make the most of every donation: https://www.stlukes-hospice.org/what-really-happens-to-the-clothes-you-donate-to-st-lukes/

This is how our team found our shop in Harrow Weald this morning – bags, clothing and furniture dumped across the pavement overnight.

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time it's happened. It's happening more and more.

We know it comes from good intentions – people wanting to support St Luke's. But leaving donations outside our shops isn't helping us. It's hurting us.

It takes our retail team hours to clear everything away – hours they should be spending serving customers and raising vital funds to support our care.

And because we have to treat anything left outside overnight as contaminated, we can't sell any of it. Every single item has to be thrown away – at our cost.

That's money that could have helped fund care for people living with life-limiting illnesses in Harrow and Brent.

So please, if you're planning to donate:

- Bring items during our opening hours
- Visit another St Luke's shop if yours is closed
- Got furniture or large items? Please call us first
- Not suitable for donation? Take it to your local recycling centre

Every donation can make a difference – but only if we can sell it safely.

One of the best things about our Starlight Walk is seeing the smiles of everyone who takes part.

It’s been a few weeks since this year’s event, but we still can’t stop smiling at these photos. 💜

Keep an eye on the St Luke’s Hospice website as we continue working to bring our community together through more events and activities.

At 71, Rose Tallon is proving you're never too old to take on a new challenge.

After more than 50 years in education, health and social care roles – including the past 11 years at St Luke's Hospice – Rose is taking to the skies with a charity skydive to help raise funds for local people with life-limiting illnesses and their families.

"I've always up for a challenge," said Rose. "I've done midnight walks, abseiled down buildings and even shaved my head to raise money for charity. I'm scared, but I know it's for a really good cause."

Rose is now almost half way to reaching her fundraising goal.
