❤️Prashant, or Prash as he was known to his family and friends since childhood, was a kind, generous and high-achieving person.

In 2022, his life and his family’s lives were upended by his unexpected bowel cancer diagnosis. Prashant became a patient of St Mark’s Hospital under the care of Mr Ian Jenkins and the Complex Cancer Team.

Tragically, Prashant passed away from his cancer in 2024 at the age of 35. To honour one of his final wishes, his family asked, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made in Prashant’s name to his chosen charities, including St Mark’s Hospital Foundation.

The family set up a memorial page using the online platform, MuchLoved, where loved ones can leave messages, share memories, and fundraise as a tribute to Prashant. His family and friends have revisited the page on Prashant’s birthday each year and have continued to honour his memory by giving to the charities that meant the most to him in his final days.

✨What is memorial fundraising?✨

Memorial fundraising is the practice of donating or asking friends and family to donate to a charitable cause in memory of a loved one. This allows people to keep their loved one’s legacy alive by contributing to a cause they were passionate about.

A memorial donation or event is a meaningful way to celebrate a loved one’s life, and by dedicating it to St Mark’s Hospital Foundation, you are contributing essential funds for our work to create a future free from the fear of bowel disease.

Alec, pictured with his wife Joan, suffered from severe ulcerative colitis, a form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and was under the care of St Mark's Hospital for more than 34 years.

After Alec passed away peacefully in 2024, Joan asked family and friends to honour his memory and recognise the hospital that made such a difference throughout his life by making donations to St Mark’s Hospital Foundation.

❤️David and Jalpa are St Mark’s patients who donated to St Mark’s Hospital Foundation to celebrate a meaningful health milestone in their lives—one at the beginning of their journey and one at the end.

In 2018, Jalpa was diagnosed with bowel cancer and became one of the first patients to undergo robotic surgery at St Mark’s Hospital. This revolutionary technology, combined with the expertise of St Mark’s clinicians, allowed her to recover quickly after surgery and she has remained cancer free for the last five years.

🎉After her five-year post-surgery screening, Jalpa and her husband, Ron, gave a generous donation to St Mark’s Hospital Foundation to mark the occasion and celebrate her continued health.

David shared that, before transferring to the care of St Mark’s Hospital for treatment of an a**l fistula, he felt lost and alone as he navigated the pain of his condition with little support from his original surgeon.

🎉Shortly after arriving at St Mark’s, David made a donation to the Foundation to celebrate his improved medical care and renewed hope for the future.

Today, we reaffirm our commitment to raising awareness of stomas, breaking stigmas, and funding research that pushes the boundaries of what is possible for patients with complex, and rare, bowel diseases. 📢⛓️‍💥🔬

Join us to help advance clinical care and make a real difference for the 205,000 people in the UK and 13.5 million worldwide currently living with a stoma.

❤️This year, and every year, the Stoma and Pouch Care team at St Mark's Hospital is dedicated to providing individualised, expert and research-based nursing care.

As part of their mission to ensure every patient undergoing stoma or internal pouch surgery is supported, understood and empowered, they are hosting an awareness event to recognise World Ostomy Day on Monday 5th October at St Mark's Hospital at Central Middlesex. 🙌

👋Meet Catherine, one of our incredible trustees!

🎂🎈After organising a birthday fundraiser to support research and education at St Mark’s, Catherine shared why the work we help fund is so important to her.

“Becoming a trustee of St Mark’s Hospital Foundation was a very personal decision for me. As my daughter has Crohn’s disease and has been a patient at the hospital, I have seen first-hand the incredible care, dedication, and support provided to children and their families. I wanted to give something back and contribute to making a difference for other patients.

To support the foundation, I decided to use my birthday celebration as a fundraising opportunity. Instead of receiving gifts, I invited my friends and family to make a donation to the hospital foundation.

The response was incredibly heart-warming. Many friends and family members were inspired by the cause and generously contributed. It was wonderful to see how a personal celebration could bring people together to support a charity that means so much to me and my family.”

✨What is celebration fundraising?✨

👩‍⚕️Vicky is a nurse consultant focusing on hereditary gastrointestinal cancer syndromes in the St Mark’s Centre for Familial Intestinal Cancer, where she has worked for more than ten years.

💍💑As Vicky and her fiancé, Simon, started planning their wedding, they felt it was important to begin their married life by making a difference for others. In place of traditional gifts, they asked their family and friends to donate to St Mark’s Hospital Foundation.

Vicky and Simon's generosity is a terrific example of celebration fundraising, which allows people to mark occasions like birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, health milestones, and retirements in a meaningful way while supporting a charity.🎁

👋Meet Pooja, Research Manager in the St Mark's Academic Institute!

Pooja supports our St Mark's Research Fellows, oversees research performance at St Mark's, and reviews new project proposals. 🔬✨

🎉We are very proud to announce that she was invited to speak at the 2026 UK Life Sciences Summit which showcases emerging innovation in the life sciences sector. She shared her expertise in combining private capital with public grants to fund crucial clinical research trials.

🗣️Pooja shared that the summit was "an important opportunity to represent St Mark’s Academic Institute and to raise the profile of the outstanding research taking place across our academic and clinical community".

In her spare time, Pooja is a mentor for the prestigious NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme, helping develop the next generation of innovative healthcare professionals across the UK. 🙌

🎉🎤Yesterday, several of our St Mark's Consultants presented at a Royal Society of Medicine event titled, 'The integrated pelvis: Advancing collaborative surgery in women’s pelvic care'.

❤️🔬Many conditions affecting the pelvic health of women and people assigned female at birth sit at the interface between gynaecology and colorectal surgery. We are proud to support multidisciplinary research at St Mark's that explores how to better address these conditions.
