Debt Justice

Debt Justice We exist to end unjust debt and the poverty and inequality it perpetuates. We campaign, we organise Formerly Jubilee Debt Campaign

We’re part of a global movement to end unjust debt and the poverty and inequality it perpetuates. As courageous campaigners and technical experts, we collaborate with communities in the UK and globally, using the power of knowledge and solidarity to rewrite the rules of global finance. Together we can build a better financial system that serves people and the planet. Join the movement to end unjus

t debt, and demand a fair economy for all. Inspired by the ancient concept of ‘jubilee’, we campaign for a world where debt is no longer used as a form of power by which the rich exploit the poor.

There can be no debt justice without climate justice. This is clear in countries like the Philippines, where rebuilding from devastating natural disasters has added to the debt burden and led to the highest national debt levels in 20 years.

Meet the women of Quezon City who share their stories of rebuilding their lives and how they are mobilising against policies that prioritise debt repayments over the needs and safety of everyday Filipinos.

Did you know that a missed council tax payment of £190 can turn into a £2,280 debt in two weeks? Here's how 👇

Almost 4 million people across the UK are in debt. The cost of living crisis and economic turmoil have squeezed household budgets to the limit. Wages haven't kept up. Bills keep climbing. For many, it’s becoming impossible to pay.

And the system escalates fast. Miss just one monthly instalment, and within two weeks councils can issue a bill for the entire year's council tax in one go. It's not that people won't pay. They simply can't.

The good news is that things are changing. Thanks to our supporters, community groups, and thousands of others across the country, from next year councils must give 63 days notice rather than just 7.

Instead of supporting families to get back on their feet, councils send in the bailiffs, adding hundreds of pounds in fees to debts people already can't afford.

A play about the global debt crisis doesn’t come along very often!

We’re excited to share that A Fine Idea, a new play from Iceandfire, is opening at London’s Arcola Theatre on 11 June and running through to 4 July. It follows Jo, an aid worker who arrives in Kenya in 2024, where Gen Z protests link unpayable debt and IMF conditions to the economic challenges of the country.

We’ll be speaking at a special after-show event on 29 June. We’d love to see you there!

It’s a scandal that while energy companies continue to post enormous profits, Ofgem is increasing the price cap and leaving people paying even more for their energy.

Millions are already facing unpayable energy debts with almost no support. For many households, another hike on top of years of sky-high bills means going deeper into debt just to keep the lights on.

The government has been dragging its feet over introducing its proposed energy debt write-off scheme for over 18 months. They must immediately act to write off debts that built up during the cost of living crisis and bring down eye-watering energy bills.

We’re looking for a Community Organiser to take forward our organising and campaigning work in South and East London.

This is an exciting opportunity to support people with lived experience of debt to demand and win policy change to end the use of bailiffs for council tax debt collection.

You don't need to have held a community organiser job title before. What matters is the commitment, and the connection to the communities this work is rooted in. We recognise that community organising skills are often developed outside of formal roles. If you have experience in campaigns, activism, mutual aid, or informal leadership in your community, we strongly encourage you to apply.

We welcome applications from people from all backgrounds. This role involves working closely with people affected by debt including black and brown communities. We particularly encourage applications from people who are underrepresented in the sector, including black and brown people, women and non-binary people, people who identify as LGBTQIA+ and people who identify as working class or have done in the past.

Right now, debt vultures are suing Ethiopia in our courts. And they can do it because 90% of debt contracts between lower-income countries and private lenders are governed by UK law.

We've beaten the vultures before. In 2010, we won a landmark law that stopped them suing countries through UK courts. It's time to do it again.

At the end of this year, the UK takes over the presidency of the G20 and the government is deciding the agenda right now. It's our chance to push for a debt justice law that stops the debt vultures and gets debt cancelled.

When oil prices spike, everyone pays more. But not everyone pays the same price.

The war on Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz, sending shockwaves through the global economy. While wealthier countries have room to absorb the shock, lower-income countries already buckling under debt payments can only keep fuel affordable by borrowing more.

Hundreds of councillors and candidates have pledged to stop using bailiffs to collect council tax debt 👏

Ahead of last week's elections, thousands of you emailed your candidates with one message: enough is enough.

Bailiff use has shot up during the cost of living crisis. People in debt aren't choosing not to pay — many simply can't. But instead of offering support, councils are using violence, harassment and intimidation.

Now hundreds of newly elected councillors have committed to ending it. By making our elected leaders pledge to take action, we've moved one step closer to ending bailiff use for council tax debt collection

Thank you for everything you did to get us here.

’s long and turbulent history with the International Monetary Fund is a clear example of how a country’s burden can undermine sovereignty. For Aylén, the is seen in the heavy repression she and her community face when fighting for their right to live on their ancestral lands.
