Better Lives Foundation

Better Lives Foundation We build sustainable futures for communities by providing medical care and education. Yonibana Sai Hospital was constructed and opened in 2009.

Better Lives Foundation (BLF) is a UK registered charity that works to better people’s lives in Sierra Leone. We want to create sustainable communities through free education and medical support. It is a fully-equipped hospital with theatre, dental room and optical service. It is the only hospital in Sierra Leone that provides free care for all regardless of age. All our international volunteers i

ncluding doctors, dentists, optometrists, nurses, engineers, teachers, accountants and IT specialists, offer their services and expertise completely free of charge including meeting their own travel, accommodation and food costs. We have also ran 24 medical camps, 21 in Sierra Leone and 3 in India, meeting requirements set by the WHO. So far we have treated in excess of 90,000 patients with a variety of illness since 2006:

> 8,158 eye consultation/spectacles dispensed
> 373 cataract surgeries with IOL lens
> 189 Hernia surgeries
> Over 10,255 dental extractions

It’s a staggering statistic that seems impossible, but it is the daily reality in Sierra Leone.

Dr Keval Shah and Dr Bijal Sisodia-Shah discuss why the "Onwards and Upwards" movement is about more than just temporary aid. We don’t want to just fix a problem for a week, we want to train local healthcare heroes to care for their own community forever.

Can a walk in the park truly save a life? At the Better Lives Foundation, we’ve seen it happen. From a 15-year-old boy recovering from a life-threatening infection to a mother delivering her baby in a safe, clean environment, every success story begins with someone like you deciding to take the first step.

We are calling on our supporters to join the BLF Walk-A-Thon on Sunday, 14th June, and take on the challenge of raising at least £150. This isn't just a number; it is the fuel that keeps our hospital in Yonibana running, providing 100% free dental, eye, and emergency care to thousands.

We believe in community. That’s why your £10 registration fee provides a full vegetarian picnic at the end of the route, a chance to rest, reflect, and meet the people making this mission possible.

We all protect what matters most.

Our next raffle prize is about safeguarding what’s over your head, while helping protect mothers and newborns during childbirth in Sierra Leone.

Simple action. Serious impact.

We often think "big" problems like maternal mortality in Sierra Leone require "big" solutions. But big things are built from small choices.

Choosing to spend £5 on a raffle ticket today doesn't just put you in the running for a Co-Working Day Pass with Fine Toad funds the very bricks of our new Neonatal Wing. You aren't just a donor; you’re an architect of hope.

The clock is ticking on our May prize.

The success of our April Dental Camp was built on the generosity of the UK dental community.

Because of the equipment and medication donated by private practices, our surgeons were able to perform complex procedures in the heart of Sierra Leone.

To the practices that stepped up: You provided the tools. We provided the hands. Together, we changed hundreds of lives.

Peace of mind often comes from knowing things are taken care of.

Next week’s raffle prize is practical, preventative, and quietly powerful.

At the same time, your entry helps build safer maternity facilities in Sierra Leone.

In the UK, a toothache is a nuisance. In , it can be fatal.

Dr Bijal Sisodia-Shah recounts the story of a 15-year-old boy who arrived with a facial infection so severe he could barely breathe or swallow.

Despite years of experience in UK emergency wards, nothing prepared our team for this level of suffering, or this level of resilience.

Your support ensures that children like him aren't left to suffer alone.
