Streetwise Opera

Streetwise Opera We enable people who’ve been homeless to find inspiration and empowerment as they rebuild their lives

We run a programme of singing and creative workshops in homeless centres and arts venues in five regions across England, which we are delivering digitally during the pandemic. We are also a critically-acclaimed opera company, and the people who take part in our workshops create and perform in extraordinary new productions working alongside exceptional professional artists.

When you become homeless, it’s not just your home and possessions that you can lose. Homelessness can also strip away your confidence, your relationships and your sense of value, all of which makes it harder to break the cycle and regain the stability of accommodation and employment.

At Streetwise Opera we help people believe in themselves again, make new connections and rebuild hope for the future. And thanks to the Big Give's campaign, you can be part of the solution too.

Through Arts For Impact, which runs from now until 12 noon on Tuesday 24 March, every donation to Streetwise Opera’s A Stage for Every Story campaign will be doubled until we reach our target of £10,000. A generous anonymous donor will be matching donations pound for pound, so if you donate £50 Streetwise Opera will receive £100 and £100 will become £200!

A donation of £50 would pay for one of our Opera Pioneers with lived experience of homelessness to attend a training session, enabling them to learn more about the arts profession and gain the skills and experience they need to take the first step into an arts career.

By donating to Streetwise Opera’s campaign, you will help dismantle the barriers that stop people with experience of homelessness from fulfilling their potential. Thank you for your support.

The beautiful images and films used in this campaign were kindly created by students of the MA Journalism course at London College of Communication, University of the Arts London under the campaign title .

We’ve packed 2 hours and 36 minutes of energy and joy into a playlist for our London Walk on 20 March.
Expect Offenbach’s Infernal Galop, Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now, Mozart’s Queen of the Night, ABBA’s Waterloo, Bernstein’s Mambo and, of course, The Proclaimers’ I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles).
And for anyone tempted to stay by the Thames and watch the sunrise, it ends with Rossini’s William Tell Overture, including that beautiful duet for cor anglais and flute, full of hope.
Have a listen via the link at the bottom of our campaign page. And while you’re there, please consider making a donation to support Streetwise Opera and cheer on the wonderful people walking to raise funds for our life-changing work.
