Do you remember the first photos you took?

Coming this September, we’re proud to announce Whippersnappers by Annebella Pollen – the first book to tell the history of children as photographers, celebrating the creativity, curiosity and distinctive perspectives of generations of young people behind the camera.

From school societies in the 1880s, via post-war camera clubs and radical 1970s workshops, to the coming of digital cameras, Whippersnappers traces photography’s movement from an elite pastime to an accessible hobby. Including a wealth of photos taken by children – of pets and friends, teachers and toys, fairies and ghosts – it presents a unique child’s-eye view of the world, seen through the camera.

An exhibition, curated by Annebella Pollen, Snap Happy! How Children Became Photographers will open at The Photographers' Gallery from 14 October 2026 – 21 February 2027.

A selection of James Pyman's drawings from Dracula feature in Drawn Through Time at Lakeside Arts in Nottingham. The exhibition brings together a collection of artists exploring the past, present and future through drawing.

Online event: The Visual Politics of the GLC in 1980s London

Join Hazel Atashroo, Sarah Samira El-Taki and Anna Minton for an online roundtable discussing the visual politics of the 1980s GLC, organised by Soundings: a journal of politics and culture.

The discussion will reflect on the Greater London Council's radical approach to public art and visual culture in the 1980s, and what today's municipal socialists and antiracist organisers can learn from Ken Livingstone's GLC and its efforts to signal that London was a city for everyone.

Part of a broader series on what today's municipal socialists can learn from the 1980s GLC, the session is also inspired by London's Ours!: Images From The Greater London Council, 1981–1986.

Built on riverside marshland previously used for wartime munitions storage, the Thamesmead development had sought to create homes for a new community of 60,000 people, in a plan that had been under the direct control of the GLC since its inception in the mid 1960s.

Thamesmead, now best known as the film location for Stanley Kubrick’s dystopian 1971 film, A Clockwork Orange, had struggled to reach its potential, with plans repeatedly scaled back over the course of the 1970s. By the 1980s, much of the GLC’s other housing responsibilities had been transferred to local boroughs, and in 1982, the GLC confirmed that plans for a Thamesmead town centre had been abandoned.

This self-guided session offers a chance to explore original records from the Greater London Council, including material relating to some of its most significant projects, policies and campaigns, as well as the campaign against its abolition.
