The brilliant Annebella Pollen will be speaking to The Royal Photographic Society’s Historical Group, exploring the stories behind our new book Whippersnappers.

For four years, Annebella Pollen has been scouring archives to discover how children became photographers in Britain. The results encompass societies in public schools in the 1880s, clubs to get East End boys off the streets in the 1930s, the proliferation of postwar hobby practices, socialist projects of the 1970s, and mass experiments in the run-up to the millennium.

Peter Kennard’s powerful work features in Artists Against the Bomb, a new exhibition at MoMA PS1 in New York, running from 10 September 2026 to 8 February 2027. The exhibition brings together artists who have used their work to challenge nuclear weapons and the culture surrounding them. Follow MoMA PS1 s1 for more information.

'While their teachers were distracted, postwar pupils drew cameras from their desks to create furtive photos as subversive school souvenirs. The portraits they took of their schoolmasters, positioned before dusty blackboards, dressed in lab coats, tweed jackets and scholarly gowns, might have been produced under the threat of camera confiscation and of suspension from school, but – in a click – the boy photographers altered, if only for a moment, the classroom balance of power.'
