New research is shining a light on veteran care — and it's calling for change.

A new study by Lancaster University and :Liverpool John Moores University funded by Forces in Mind Trust, has explored how we can better support veterans facing co-occurring alcohol and mental health problems.

The findings point to three key changes needed:

✅ Approaches that use integrated services, provide flexible and holistic care, and remove abstinence-only policies.

✅ Increased awareness of available support for veterans with co-occurring alcohol and mental health problems.

✅ Approaches such as national campaigns and local strategies which aim to reduce stigma.

Co-occurring alcohol and mental health struggles are common among veterans, but the right support can make all the difference. This research is a step toward care that actually meets people where they are.

As summer continues in the UK, so do many music festivals, and while some festivals have a stronger alcohol-free presence, it can still feel like alcohol is required to have fun at these big music events, but as we know, that's just not true!

It’s no wonder alcohol creeps its way into summer celebrations with the way it’s pushed through alcohol marketing, event sponsorship and supermarket deals, glamourising its presence and deeming it essential for celebrating the 'right way'.

Let's centre what really matters this summer! If you're worried about your drinking, or looking to cut down check out helpful tools and advice on our website.👇

"Services designed to make everything easier are making things worse.”

Meet Aish!👋

Earlier this month Aish appeared in The Telegraph talking about how rapid alcohol deliveries played a big role in her drinking and a setback one year into her sobriety.

Today, Aish shares her full story with us: "The promise of ‘fast, reliable, convenient delivery’ that I’d fallen prey to at my lowest point had now started niggling away. It was tempting me again."

Not only was it quick and convenient for alcohol to arrive at Aish's home in just 20 minutes, but 'Buy Now, Pay Later' options like Klarna removed financial barriers too.

"What scared me most was how quickly alcohol wrapped itself around my life again. The way it could feel like comfort whilst quietly destroying everything around me within a matter of days."

Online alcohol deliveries made it so easy for Aish to order alcohol to her home and keep her drinking hidden from her loved ones. In a matter of months, she was in hospital and had a detox. Here, she made the decision to stop the cycle and commit to her sobriety, and has been alcohol-free and campaigning for change ever since.

"As someone who is now sober and has experienced first-hand how the speed, ease and unlimited aspects of rapid deliveries can fuel addiction, and make it harder to stay away from or cut back on alcohol, some simple changes would go a long way for people like me."

At Alcohol Change UK we've been calling for better safeguards to protect people like Aish. You can find out more about our campaign and read Aish's full story here⬇️

It's time to !

By sober shaming others, we’re upholding society’s view that drinking alcohol is normal and not drinking is not.

On a societal level, sober shaming puts up a barrier for people considering making a change to their drinking. If you know you’re going to be challenged about your non-drinking, that you’re going to have to explain it time and again, that friends and family may judge you or be upset with you, it’s much easier, and probably more tempting, to just keep drinking.

It’s in everybody’s interest to break down this view so we can all make our own choices about alcohol, free from any judgement. Let's make not drinking normal, as it should be!

"It is vital that we make things safer for people when it comes to the online sale of alcohol."

Meet Paul 👋

Over the last few years, Paul has been supporting his friend who's struggling with their relationship with alcohol, seeing first hand the impact of rapid online alcohol deliveries.

When worried about his friend, he dropped by to check in on her and arrived to find “a sea of bottles, empty rapid delivery service bags and pizza boxes”. While he was there, another alcohol delivery arrived.

Paul questioned how this was even possible? Since this moment he's been pushing for change, engaging with his local MP and licensing authorities.

We've experienced some pretty high temperatures so far this summer!☀️⛱️😎

The appearance of the sun is a stark reminder that alcohol still feels at the centre of how we socialise as a society. Whether its the sponsorship of summer sporting events and festivals or multi-buy discounts and displays in supermarkets, it can feel hard to make a conscious decision to cut down or be mindful of our drinking.

A mix of alcohol and sun can impact our health in different ways, so it’s important to be mindful of any increased risks to our wellbeing if we are drinking alcohol, even in smaller amounts.

There is a common misconception that just because you're having a few pints - it's not a problem!

In reality, alcohol can creep up on us all. From sleepless nights, poor mood and tiredness, to strained relationships.😴🤬😓

Just because its a beer or more, it's still alcohol and while it's true other drinks may contain more, any drink can become a problem if you drink too much.

Did you know that for men having 4 beers would be considered binge drinking? If you're drinking over 8 units of alcohol in one sitting...that is binge drinking and can cause harm right across the spectrum.

For women it is 6 units, which is equivalent to around 3 beers!

Happy August!🧡☀️

We're well into what has been a very hot summer this year. The hot weather and sunshine can lead to a lot of great moments, whether you've been enjoying a great summer of sport or catching up with friends and family over a BBQ or picnic in the park!⚽🍔🍓

It can also be quite draining on our social batteries, particularly if you're going along to events newly alcohol-free. It can feel overwhelming approaching a social setting where you would have usually been drinking alcohol. There might be some urges or anxiety too, but be kind to yourself in those moments.

We're proud of you here at Alcohol Change UK for choosing to make a change with your drinking! Here's a sprinkle of motivation to keep you going and enjoying a sober summer. 🧡✨
