Hi I’m Tim Brogden, Therapeutic Gardening Project Manager at Cody Dock. This geranium is a distant relative to one of my father’s from 20 years ago. It is a cutting of a cutting of a cutting of a cutting…you get the picture…do you have a plant story to share with us? A plant is special to you; a plant that was given to you by someone; one you inherited or rescued or something you’ve grown and nurtured yourself?”

‘Plant Stories’ will feature as an audio accompaniment to Common Threads, found in the listening booth outside the Boat House.

We know how hard it is to get experience in the art and museum sectors.

As a part of the upcoming exhibition Common Threads, we will be offering new volunteer positions to engage visitors and be guardians of the exhibition.

There will also be an opportunity to lead talks and tours about the exhibition.

As this is a new position, it is important for us to hear your feedback on how we can keep improving your volunteer experience!

We had a fantastic time working with Newham Music and sound artist Jamie Maule to provide a series of sound recording & production workshops at Cody Dock this summer!
In each workshop, the groups spent time along the river Lea, learning to make field recordings using different devices to capture both natural and human made sounds they came across. The young people then processed their recordings in Logik to each produce their own sound piece 🔊🔊
Jamie will use the pieces to contribute to a sound project in collaboration with Newham music which will see its debut at our September Community Open day! The piece will then be displayed at Art in the Docks ❤️❤️

As you may have seen earlier in the year, we did an open call for an artist to respond to the brief:

🐟What’s in the River?🐟

We had a mass of responses from a variety of different practices and unique proposals for our site. We had such a strong quota of abilities, but Richard’s work stood out in its synchronicity with our present and future plans.

Standing as an iconic symbol next to the Frederick Kitchen, Richard’s sculpture will shine a light upon the life of the clam in the Lower Lea & its complicated story as an ‘invasive species’.

The clam is a symbol of migration and this sculpture will stand also as a symbol of our diverse community of Newham.

⚓️Richard explores contemporary themes using traditional methods of blacksmithing, responding to the locality of his pieces with natural motifs. We can’t wait to see his piece ‘The Iron Voyager’, opening on the 19th September!

At our Open day, our Ecology and Education team will be running a very special reed weaving workshop ‘Weaving the Lea’.

We will be collecting oral and written stories about how the river has changed and what it means to them.

Weaving these stories into the reeds which will then be weaved into the structure of the otter holt. Your stories will become part of the Lea and homes for potential otters!
