Today's the day, Kai!

Today, 22-year-old Kai Staines from Great Notley, Essex takes on an incredible 82km run across Essex, one kilometre for every year of his beloved Nan Diane's life.

Diane sadly passed away in 2025 after being diagnosed with throat cancer. She would have celebrated her 82nd birthday on August 17th, and today, Kai is honouring her memory in the most extraordinary way; running from Great Notley, through Rayne, Felsted, Great Waltham and Great Leighs, before finishing back on the green at Great Notley.

Kai has been training hard for this moment, and today he'll be supported every step of the way by friends and family, some of whom are joining him for sections of the route.

In his own words:
"Nan was a huge part of everyone's lives, and I wanted to do something to remember her and help others in her situation. I hope Nan would be proud of what I'm attempting."

We are so proud to be part of Kai's tribute to Diane today. Every mile he runs helps us continue our work supporting people affected by head and neck cancer, and funding vital research.

We're looking for someone brilliant to join our small, ambitious team here at Oracle Head & Neck Cancer UK, and we'd love it to be someone from our community. Whether you're a recent graduate, a college leaver, or already have some relevant experience in fundraising, marketing, communications, events or customer-facing roles, we'd love to hear from you. If you know someone this could be right for, please share this with them!

No specific professional background is required, just curiosity, enthusiasm, and a genuine willingness to get stuck in. Full training and mentoring is provided from day one, whether this is your very first role or a step into a new sector.

In this role, you'll get hands-on experience across:
✅ Fundraising strategy and donor relationships
✅ Event planning and delivery
✅ Social media, website content and newsletters
✅ Campaign materials and storytelling
✅ CRM and general charity operations

Please sign Susie's petition calling for fairer research funding for head and neck cancer.

Head and neck cancer receives under 3% of cancer research spend.

For people living with these cancers, and the often devastating, lifelong consequences of treatment, this needs to change.
Nine years ago, Susie was told: “It is what we feared, you have cancer.” She was 59.

Her diagnosis was a rare T4 squamous cell carcinoma of the paranasal sinus. Surgery followed, leaving her without part of her nose, four upper teeth and gum, and with a hole in the roof of her mouth.

"It took me 3 weeks before I could fully look at my face. I had a hole where a nose should be, another one inside where the roof of my mouth should have been and I lost 4 upper teeth plus my gum."

Then came 12 gruelling weeks of radiotherapy.

Today, nearly a decade later, Susie is living with significant late effects of her treatment, including bone density loss and osteonecrosis in her upper jaw. She is still waiting for remedial treatment that will allow her to have a denture, and eventually, another prosthetic nose.

In between appointments, cancellations and long periods of waiting, she wears a mask when she leaves the house. Not because she wants to hide, but because she has experienced cruel comments, unwanted attention and people coughing at her because of how she looks.

She told us:

“It’s 9 years now, nearly ten... and at this moment I am waiting to have remedial work so that I can have a denture and then I will be able to have another prosthetic nose.”

Susie's decision to campaign for better research funding wasn't something she had planned. It came from frustration.
More research could mean better treatments. Better reconstruction. Better support. And fewer people having to live with the consequences Susie has experienced.

This August, Tremark Director Mark Hodgson has been walking 10km every single day, 310km in total - to raise money for Oracle Head & Neck Cancer UK.

He's smashed his original target of £10,000 and he's now pushing on towards a stretch target of £15,000 which is simply incredible!

Mark underwent treatment for Head and Neck Cancer and his oncologist was Oracle Trustee Dr Mehmet Sen. To see Mark, one of Dr Sen's former patients, now walking every single day of August to fund the kind of research and support that shaped his own care, is a full-circle moment and exactly why awareness campaigns like this matter so much. What's more, Mehmet and his wife have been able to join Mark on two of his fundraising walks.

Mark's fundraiser is raising vital awareness of HPV-associated head and neck cancers, a growing but still poorly understood cause of disease. Head and neck cancer is now the 4th most common cancer in men in the UK, with 17,000 new cases diagnosed every year, yet only a third are caught early, which significantly affects outcomes.

We want to share an incredibly moving story from Leigh Shelton, who recently completed a huge challenge in honour of her husband, Robin, and raised an amazing £3,821 for Oracle Head & Neck Cancer UK.

In Leigh's own words:

"I wanted to do something in Robin's honour and continue raising awareness of the life-saving impact of the HPV vaccine. Many people don't realise that the HPV vaccine doesn't just protect girls, it can also save the lives of boys and men by helping to prevent mouth and throat cancers.

We miss Robin in ways that words will never fully capture, and losing him has changed our family's lives forever. If this vaccine had been available when Robin was younger, I wouldn't be writing this today."

Leigh took on a huge physical challenge to mark this cause, cycling from Newcastle to Edinburgh, 50 miles a day for four days, carrying her own supplies the whole way. Alongside her friend Wendy, she trained for months, and thought of Robin with every mile.

Leigh's hope isn't just for donations; more than anything, she wants people to learn about the HPV vaccine, and why it matters for boys as much as girls.

Thank you, Leigh, for your extraordinary fundraising, and for helping keep Robin's memory alive in a way that could genuinely save lives.

It's World Head and Neck Cancer Day and if you do one thing today, share this post.

Head and Neck Cancer is one of the fastest growing cancers in the UK - yet hardly anyone's heard about it. We need to change that so more people get treated early.

Head and neck cancer symptoms can look like everyday things: A sore throat, a mouth ulcer, a croaky voice. That's why they get ignored.

The signs to know:

🔹 A sore throat or mouth/throat pain that won't go away
🔹 A lump or swelling in the neck
🔹 A lip or mouth ulcer that won't heal
🔹 A hoarse voice or change in how you sound
🔹 Pain or difficulty swallowing
🔹 Earache

Had any of these for 3+ weeks? Book in with your GP or dentist.

Most of the time it's nothing. But if it's not, catching these cancers early literally saves lives.

🎗️ It's World Head and Neck Cancer Day and today, like every other, 38 people in the UK will be told they have head and neck cancer. That's one person roughly every 40 minutes.

For many people with Head and Neck Cancer, one of the first things they notice is that it's hard to swallow comfortably. Something so normal, most of us never notice we're doing it. Until suddenly we can't.

The stats are hard to ignore:

📍 Only 45.5% survive 10+ years
📍 Incidence is up to double in the most deprived communities
📍 Where you live still shapes your chances of survival

Head and neck cancer is one of the fastest-rising cancers in the UK, affecting around 14,000 people a year. Yet it's still misunderstood and often diagnosed too late. As the only national charity dedicated to this cause, we're building something new, and we want ambitious fundraisers to help us do it.

We're recruiting for two remote, part-time roles to join our small but ambitious team:

🎯 Individual Giving, Community & Events Fundraiser
Part-time (22.5 hrs/week) | Up to £32,000 FTE (£19,200 actual) | Remote
Bring your individual giving and community fundraising experience to steward supporters across their whole journey with us, from first donation to lifelong advocate.

🤝 Trusts, Foundations and Corporate Fundraiser
Part-time (15 hrs/week) | £40,000 FTE (£16,000 actual) | Remote
