A busy week in the Channel for THV Galatea!

Our crew has been hard at work carrying out buoy deployment operations which saw Type 1 lightweight aluminium superstructures enter the water.
In addition to marking safe passage for mariners as critical aids to navigation, these buoys also serve as key platforms for third party devices, such as hydrographic data equipment for the Met Office.

A huge well done to Captain Martin and our dedicated crew for successfully replacing existing buoys with the new superstructures, designed to improve accessibility and enhance the performance of meteorological-hydrographic equipment.

THV Alert heads into dry dock!
Under the steady hands of Commander Tristan and our crew, the vessel arrived in Lowestoft for routine maintenance to ensure it stays in shipshape condition.

In April of 2025, Lighthouse Maintenance Engineer Jack was injured while working on Skerries Lighthouse. RNLI crews from Holyhead and Moelfre stations were soon on hand providing medical assistance and Jack was transported to the mainland via Moelfre’s all-weather lifeboat, ‘Kiwi’.

This week, the much-recovered Jack was able to thank the Moelfre RNLI crew in-person, and alongside fellow Engineer Ian and Head of Engineering Steve, presented the station with funds raised in thanks by Trinity House staff and our followers.

Trinity House is proud of our staff for their fundraising efforts and we thank Moelfre RNLI and Coxswain Vince for their hospitality which included a tour of Kiwi and the station.

Happy 20th birthday to THV Alert!

20 years ago today, our Rapid Intervention Vessel first arrived in Harwich and what a journey it has been. From buoy handling and wreck marking to towing operations and hydrographic surveying, THV Alert has played a vital role in keeping our mariners safe.
