Fishing for Schools

Fishing for Schools Fishing for Schools is an initiative of the Countryside Alliance Foundation. We currently operate in about 30 Schools in England and Wales annually.

Fishing for Schools started in 2008 and offers young people the opportunity to discover the joy of fishing, whilst learning new skills in a fun and proactive way. It is delivered by the Countryside Alliance Foundation and world famous angler Charles Jardine, and to date over 2,000 students have benefited from Fishing for Schools. The charity helps pupils re-engage with education, building their confidence and self-esteem, while at the same time assisting with new qualifications and skills.

It's National Rural Crime Action Week

Our waterways and countryside are places to enjoy, learn from and look after.

Through Fishing for Schools, young people spend time outdoors learning not only how to fish, but also about the importance of respecting the environment and taking care of the places they visit.

From keeping banks and waterways free from litter to understanding the importance of responsible behaviour in the countryside, these are lessons that can help young people become responsible custodians of the rural environment.

We’re proud to play our part in helping the next generation understand the importance of looking after our countryside.

🎣 The countdown is on! Just one week to go…

Applications for our Fishing for Schools provision for the 2026–2027 school year open on Tuesday 15 September!

Schools in our eligible areas can apply for our free four-session programme, giving young people aged 10–16 the opportunity to learn new skills, build confidence and experience the many benefits of fishing.

📅 Save the date and make sure your school is ready to apply!

Applications will be open until Monday 9 November, but don’t miss the opportunity to get your application in.

📚🎣 It’s September, which means it’s back-to-school time at Fishing for Schools!

We hope schools have enjoyed a restful summer and are feeling refreshed and ready for the new school year.

We’re looking forward to working with schools again this term and have lots to be excited about in the months ahead — including the pilot of our new Angling & the Countryside qualification, as well as the opening of applications for our Fishing for Schools programme.

🎣 A win for anglers at Askern Lake 💪

A blanket fishing ban proposed by Doncaster Council has been put on hold following a strong local backlash, with more than 1,200 residents signing a petition opposing the move.

After the Countryside Alliance worked with local anglers to challenge the decision and make the case for keeping fishing at the lake, the council has now confirmed there is no ban, while a "multi-agency action plan" is developed.

It's an important reminder that people should not have their access to angling removed without proper consultation - and that when we stand together, we can make a difference.

After months of planning and preparation, the pilot phase of the Angling and the Countryside Qualification is almost here.

This Ofqual-accredited qualification will give young people the opportunity to learn outdoors, develop new skills and work towards a recognised achievement in a way that suits how they learn.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported our appeal. As we approach the starting line, there is still time to support the pilot and help us build the foundations for the future.

🎣 Have you heard about the National Celebration of Young People and Fishing 2026?

We’re helping to spread the word about this fantastic event, which brings together young anglers for a celebration of fishing, friendship and the next generation of our sport.

Our Kent team have had a blast supporting sessions with the wonderful folk at Choice Support during the summer break.

Our latest session took place last week, led by Fishing for Schools duo David Evans and Les Jones.

The weather was kinder last week and nowhere near as hot as it has been for earlier sessions.

Fishing was a little slow at times, but all caught 8-10 fish each and the variety of species was fantastic - roach, rudd, tench, perch, crucian carp, mirror carp, common carp and a chub/ide.

And the strangest catch of the day …. a terrapin!

More to follow, including our final session on the 29th of August – not forgetting news of our annual art competition. Watch this space!
