Fishing for Schools

Fishing for Schools Fishing for Schools is an initiative of the Countryside Alliance Foundation. We currently operate in about 30 Schools in England and Wales annually.

Fishing for Schools started in 2008 and offers young people the opportunity to discover the joy of fishing, whilst learning new skills in a fun and proactive way. It is delivered by the Countryside Alliance Foundation and world famous angler Charles Jardine, and to date over 2,000 students have benefited from Fishing for Schools. The charity helps pupils re-engage with education, building their confidence and self-esteem, while at the same time assisting with new qualifications and skills.

From classroom to bankside, pupils at Spring Common Academy have worked brilliantly throughout their Fishing for Schools sessions, developing new skills and growing in confidence.

Alongside learning how to fish safely and responsibly, they explored teamwork, communication, decision-making, problem-solving and respect for the environment. They also learnt the importance of careful fish handling and ensuring fish are returned safely to the water.

The programme finished on a high, with pupils catching an impressive 39 fish across six different species on their final session. The largest fish of the day was a common carp weighing 4lb.

Well done to everyone involved – a fantastic achievement and a brilliant way to tie up their F4S sessions! 🎣

💡“Be brave, stay curious, and never be afraid to try something new.”

In the first of his new monthly tips for Fishing for Schools, our ambassador Big Duffs Fishing reflects on stepping outside his comfort zone, after a catfishing trip on Spain’s River Ebro completely changed his perspective.

This is what Fishing for Schools is all about - building confidence, trying new experiences and discovering new passions through angling.

From feeder fishing to fly fishing for carp, there was plenty for Waterfront UTC pupils to get stuck into earlier this month 🎣

Pupils had the chance to experience a wide range of angling styles throughout the day, including waggler fishing, whip fishing, feeder fishing, surface carp fishing and even fly fishing for carp.

Working in pairs, the group rotated between coaches to try different techniques, pick up new skills and gain hands-on experience across a variety of angling disciplines. It was fantastic to see the pupils fully engaged throughout the session and encouraging one another as the day progressed.

A huge thank you to The Tackle Box for supporting our sessions with Waterfront UTC - support like this helps us continue introducing more young people to angling and learning outdoors. 👏

We’re delighted to be continuing our partnership with The Tackle Box, whose ongoing support plays a vital role in helping us deliver Fishing for Schools sessions.

Their backing means more young people can step outside the classroom and onto the bankside, building confidence, taking on new skills and connecting with the natural world. This year, the partnership will support sessions at Waterfront UTC in Gillingham, giving students hands-on opportunities to learn in a completely different environment. 🎣

"For 40 years, The Tackle Box has been a source of inspiration to me and to anglers throughout the UK. The Peet brothers and the wider team have offered the kind of knowledge and support that anglers thrive on," said Fishing for Schools Director Charles Jardine Fly Fishing.

"To have their backing for Fishing for Schools means so much to me personally, and to the young people in Kent."

We’re hugely grateful for their continued commitment, especially at a time when support for initiatives like this is more important than ever.
