Exercise Troll Challenger 2026:

Cadet Regiment Sergeant Major (RSM) Murtagh recently took part in Exercise Troll Challenger 2026, where he spent four days trekking on foot through the Setesdal Valley in Norway where forests, rivers, lakes, and quiet trails reveal stunning scenery and rich cultural heritage.

The exercise concluded with a white water rafting experience, which Cadet RSM Murtagh thoroughly enjoyed.

Cadet RSM Murtagh had a fantastic trip and encourages all to take every opportunity to get involved with the Cadet Centre for Adventurous Training (CCAT), who deliver adventurous training qualifications and skill-based experience courses for both Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs) and Cadets aged 15+ from the Army Cadets.

During the half-term break, Abbey Detachment visited MOD Kineton, home of the Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), Munitions and Search (DEMS) Training Regiment.

Throughout the day, cadets were given a fascinating insight into a range of specialist roles within the Regiment, receiving briefings from instructors on careers ranging from Ammunition Technicians to Electronic Warfare operators. They also had the opportunity to try on the EOD bomb suit and get hands-on with some of the specialist search equipment used by personnel.

A particular highlight of the visit was the chance to operate the L3Harris T7 robot. Cadets attempted to pick up objects using the robot’s remote-control arm with Sgt Major Deville showing them how it’s done! The cadets were then shown how a No. 2 operator would use the system to enter and clear a building ahead of personnel.

The day concluded with a visit to the memorial, where cadets paid their respects to Captain D. M. Shepherd, a former cadet of the company who lost his life while serving in Afghanistan. The company continues to honour his memory by hosting an annual military skills competition in his name.

It was a fantastic and informative visit that provided cadets with a valuable insight into the capabilities and careers available within the Regiment. The detachment would like to extend its sincere thanks to Sgt B. Litherland for taking the time to organise and facilitate such an excellent day.
