Early on Tuesday morning we heard that our scout hut at the 28th was broken into and vandalised.
A Window was smashed, equipment was damaged, and items were taken from both buildings. A Fire extinguisher was discharged where our camping equipment is, the second one was also discharged leaving us with a huge clean-up operation and making the space unsafe to use due to the mess.
Sadly, this means we’re unable to meet for the next couple of weeks while we clear up and make the building safe again. Like many Scout groups, all of our leaders are volunteers with daytime jobs, so this will take time.
Despite this, our young people have shown just how resilient and positive they are. Instead of regular meetings, they’re already making the best of things - planning a mini hike and a trip to the chip shop together next week.
We’ve also been incredibly touched by the response from our Scout families. Parents have been amazing, offering their support, time, and help with the clean-up. Even more heartwarming, some of our young people have asked if they can help by organising things like cake sales to raise money for repairs. It really shows what Scouts is all about.
As volunteers, we give our time to provide opportunities for young people in our community, so it’s incredibly upsetting to see this happen. But the support we’ve already received reminds us how strong our community is.
We’re now working hard to get everything back up and running as quickly as possible.
We’re also incredibly grateful for any offers of practical help or support from the local community.
Thank you to everyone who has reached out so far – it really does mean a lot 💜
