We started on our tribute to David Hockney first sketching out a large 32 piece outline. This was based loosely on the view from outside our unit and around. Individuals then each took a section and painted that section. The full image will emerge as all the sections are painted.

This week…..

The Art & Artists group with Kevin started looking at the life and work of David Hockney after he recently passed away.

So this week the Tuesday and Wednesday groups will be creating a tribute to Hockney along the lines of his giant Yorkshire landscapes made up of multiple canvases.

A real group project creating individual parts that will come together to make a larger piece.

Today we looked at Hockney's latest landscapes, mainly a BBC documentary called the 'Art of Seeing', where Hockney explained his techniques in working on a huge scale.
Nichols Canyon (pictured) is a mid 70s Californian landscape where he has started experimenting with how the eye moves across a large painted surface.

Our activity was using strips of cartridge paper to make our own kendal variant of a Hockney landscape, using different kinds of pens.

A lovely session today. We drew various animals using Indian ink or charcoal. We were using sticks and cotton buds with the ink. Then we put a colour wash behind and some added colour to the animals.

Next week we'll be looking at David Hockney, who sadly passed away yesterday. He was constantly experimenting with different mediums, mastering each in turn, across paint, print, photography, collage and drawing, along with his innovative use of photography, he was one of the first artists to embrace digital photography, which developed into his use of digital art, adding to his mountain of sketchbooks. Over the last six decades he was constantly working, changing his styles and techniques, he had travelled extensively but lately he would spend his time out in the fields of Yorkshire, painting lanscapes.

He leaves us with a huge body of work, so next week we'll get started on looking at some of his landscapes.

Today we carried on working with patterns, inspired by Bridget Riley from last week. Further work with Zentagles gave us a lovely collaboration piece, where our artists contributed designs to the same artwork (first in the images below). It was a chilled, easy going session.

Next week we're covering a new artist. Watch this space.
