Carer Support South Lakes

Carer Support South Lakes Carer Support South Lakes is an independent, local charity. We provide a range of services to support and enhance the lives of unpaid carers of all ages.

Carer Support South Lakes supports more than 1,000 Carers each year, including 140 young Carers. A Carer is a person of any age who, on an unpaid basis, looks after a relative or friend who cannot manage at home without help. This could be due to age, physical or mental illness, substance misuse or disability. We provide Carers with emotional and practical support, and allow them to take some time for themselves.

We currently support over 250 Young Carers and with kind donations like these we can treat our Young Carers after all of the hard work they do.

If you know a young person who could be in a caring role please feel free to contact us to see what support we could offer.

A big thank you to Hadwins Volkswagen for sponsoring our new staff car! We are very grateful for the continuing partnership and the support.

In a rural area, like the South Lakes, transport is often a major hurdle. This vehicle enables our team to reach even the most remote unpaid Carers in our community.

Local partnerships like these keep our wheels turning (literally!).

Thank you Hadwins for continuing to support local Carers in this way!

We were pleased to welcome Rory and Mary from Carer Support South Lakes to our showroom, to collect this lovely Volkswagen Polo, which we are donating to the charity for the next 2 years.

Carer Support South Lakes is an independent, local charity and network partner of Carers Trust, who provide a range of services to support and enhance the lives of unpaid carers of all ages throughout South Lakeland.

We are thrilled to continue to give them our support, and if you would like to do the same, you can find out more on their website: www.carersupportsouthlakes.org.uk

Need someone to talk things through with? ๐Ÿ“ž

Our Here to Hear service offers unpaid Carers a regular monthly phone call with a volunteer - someone who will listen, check in and give you space to talk about whateverโ€™s on your mind.

Itโ€™s a simple, no pressure way to feel a bit more supported, especially when caring leaves little room for your own thoughts and feelings.

If you'd like to find out more, call 01539 815970 or visit: www.carersupportsouthlakes.org.uk/here-to-hear-service

Thinking about volunteering, but prefer to stay behind the scenes?

Not every volunteering role involves speaking on the phone or being client-facing.

We also need volunteers who can help with simple admin tasks, organising information, supporting staff and keeping things running smoothly in the background.

These roles are a great fit if youโ€™re organised, reliable and enjoy practical tasks. You donโ€™t need experience in social care - just a willingness to help and a bit of time to spare.

Behind-the-scenes volunteers make a real difference by giving staff more time to support unpaid Carers directly. Itโ€™s also a great way to build confidence and experience, with several volunteers having even moved into paid roles, including with us!

Got thoughts or worries circling round and round? A quick 'thought dump' can help โœ๏ธ

When you're supporting someone else, your mind can quickly fill up - reminders, worries, to-dos, emotions and things you haven't had space to process.

Getting everything out of your head and onto paper can make things feel more manageable.

Here's how to try:
1๏ธโƒฃ Set a 5-minute timer
2๏ธโƒฃ Write whatever comes up
3๏ธโƒฃ Don't worry about spelling
4๏ธโƒฃ Stop when the timer ends

Thereโ€™s no right or wrong way to do it - itโ€™s simply a way to give your mind a bit more space.

Keeping up with school can be tough when you're a Young Carer ๐Ÿ“š

Homework, attendance and concentration can all be affected when you're supporting someone at home - with Young Carers carrying far more responsibility than their classmates or teachers realise.

With permission, our Support Workers can work directly with schools to make sure staff understand the situation and the right support is in place.

This includes discussing absence issues, setting realistic homework expectations and addressing any bullying concerns.

School should feel like a supportive place for every student, and we're here to make sure that's the case for Young Carers.

Could you help give an unpaid Carer a break?

Our Sitting Service volunteers stay with the person being cared for so their Carer can step out for essential errands, appointments or take some time to themselves. Itโ€™s complete peace of mind for the Carer that makes a real difference to daily life.

Like all our volunteering roles, you don't need specialist training, just reliability, patience and a friendly manner!

Sits are up to three hours at a time, usually once a month and always on weekdays between 9am and 4:30pm.

We make sure volunteers feel confident and supported, and we run regular coffee mornings and awareness sessions so you can meet others and share experiences.

If youโ€™d like to make a practical difference to the life of a local Carer, weโ€™d love to hear from you:

Feeling more worn down than usual? It might be early signs of burnout.

Caring can slowly chip away at your energy, focus and mood - especially when youโ€™re juggling everything with little time for yourself. Burnout doesnโ€™t arrive all at once; it can take time to build and be hard to spot.

Here are a few signs to keep an eye on:
๐Ÿ’ค Constant tiredness, even after resting
๐Ÿ˜ค Feeling more irritable than usual
๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ Struggling to think clearly

These symptoms donโ€™t mean youโ€™re doing anything wrong - theyโ€™re often a sign youโ€™ve been carrying too much for too long.

If any of this feels familiar, weโ€™re here to help you talk it through and find support that fits your situation.

Feeling the winter blues? You're not alone ๐Ÿ’™

January and February can be heavy months for many - the short days, the cold weather and the grey can all have an impact on both our mental and physical health.

And when you're supporting someone else as an unpaid Carer, it can feel all the more overwhelming.

But there are things we can do to make these winter days a little easier, like:
๐ŸŒฅ๏ธ Get outside for 15-30 mins daily
๐Ÿฒ Enjoy warm, comforting meals
๐Ÿ“– Spend the evenings reading/watching comfort content

And remember, spring isn't that far off now! ๐ŸŒผ
