Then there were three! We collected Miss Tiggy on Tuesday, Teacup on Wednesday and little Pixie on Thursday. All three are very underweight - although hoglets they are aged around 4-5 weeks and should be at least double their weight - little Pixie weighed only 101 grams on arrival. Whilst not currently showing parasites they are still extremely vulnerable and Miss Tiggy showed all the signs of a bacterial gut infection. They all require to be in incubators to maintain their core temperature so all their energies can go into putting on weight and growing strong. They are siblings, so it is likely something has happened to mum. Thanks to Cath’s vigilance they stand a chance - they certainly wouldn’t have lasted much longer as nights are now colder and they have no reserve to draw on. Huge thanks also to our amazing volunteers - Ali, Kathryn and Linda who collected each little one respectively. Video is of Pixie tucking into breakfast yesterday morning.

Huge thanks to the guys from Castle Huntly Open Prison who have spent the week building outdoor runs for our hedgehogs. We cannot praise them highly enough - not only did they undertake this project but also offered their help with lots of other tasks. As well being hard working they were also really keen to learn more about hedgehogs - and met a few as we were cleaning them out. We hope to eventually create a wildlife friendly garden so that we can offer recovering hedgehogs a more natural environment prior to release - this is our first step. Thanks again Castle Huntly you should be very proud of your work and we sincerely hope to have more opportunities to work in partnership with you.
Alison and all at HogsCroft 👏👏👏

Little Teacup - 108 grams - was spotted in Cath’s Methven garden yesterday. Just the day before Cath had also noticed little Miss Tiggy - slightly bigger, both out in the day. Both were admitted to the rescue on respective days and are now tucked up in incubators. They may be siblings but as Miss T is currently quite poorly we are keeping them separate - at least for now.
Thank you Cath for being so vigilant and thanks to Ali and Kathryn - two of our volunteers who went out to collect them.

In the last three days we have taken in 6 hoglets and all our incubators are now full - as are all our hutches in the Critical Care Cabin.

We are desperately short of Puppy Pads and royal canin starter mousse for mother and babydogs. We have 5 hoglets weighing less than 200 grams and a further 4 under 250 grams, plus lots who are very poorly and not managing solid food.

These wee souls have been born later in the year and having either wandered away from the nest or just about an age to have left, they are struggling to cope. Temperatures at nights are now dropping in this part of Scotland and their natural diet is in even shorter supply. Lots coming in are very thin and dehydrated, have flystrike and ticks, some with nasty skin conditions, wounds and most extremely poorly with lots of internal parasites.

As a charity run entirely by volunteers - none of us here receive any ‘pay’ - we are giving even more of our time and working extremely hard to get them well - if you can help us with a few supply shortages we’d appreciate it.

Hilma is one of the four hedgehogs we have admitted in the last two days. She was found in Elsa’s Auchterarder garden on Monday tea time. Hilma weighs only 142 grams and is extremely underweight - whilst still young she should be twice this weight. On arrival she was ‘hyperactive’ and very unsettled. This can be a sign of internal parasites, however she soon settled once in an incubator. Her p**p test has not revealed any parasitic activity, we shall repeat this as these small organisms are not always obvious. Clearly malnourished, we hope that now she is receiving the care she needs she can begin the road to recovery.

Another three of our recent releases - all came in as small hoglets.

Casper had extensive fkystrike and lots of internal parasites - now a lovely healthy boy back home to Kinross.

Cole was a skinny girl, also suffering with parasites. She was slow to respond to treatment to start with but once we had eradicated her burden she went from strength to strength.

Alfie was a tiny wee lad, placed in an incubator on arrival. He made great progress and just as we were preparing for release a p**p test revealed some very unexpected parasites. Determined to go home Alfie soon recovered! Back home to Loch of Lowes.

Thank you to all finders for rescuing, collecting, providing hedgehog houses and returning these gorgeous souls back home 😊❤️🦔

If you haven’t done so already please spare a few moments to nominate us. We are purchasing 18 new pods for the rehabilitation cabin as well as building some outdoor runs and next year aim to create a large wildlife friendly garden. The pods alone cost not far short of £8,000 in total. 🙏

When Tina brought Isaac from Kirruemuir in on Monday he was in a sorry state. He’d been spotted out in the day over the course of the weekend. He had nasty infected bite wounds either side of his head. Isaac’s nose was also quite swollen, he was dehydrated and very skinny. A p**p test also revealed a huge internal parasite burden.
He has required lots of treatment including daily wound care, not only was pus oozing out of his wounds but it had created matted knots which had set up a further skin irritation.
Isaac is doing better, wounds clear of infection, nose not as swollen and beginning to eat a bit more. Internal parasites still requiring treatment - still poorly but we are now hopeful. He’s such a brave beautiful soul 😍
