Protests & Suffragettes have just launched a new 12-week social media campaign connecting Scotland’s suffrage histories with contemporary inequalities women and girls continue to face today.

The campaign aims to build awareness and momentum towards the 2028 Centenary of the Equal Franchise Act — the landmark moment when women finally gained the vote on equal terms with men. As we approach that anniversary, they want to raise the profile of Scotland’s role in the struggle for equality, bring overlooked local stories back into public view, and connect that history with the continuing work for equality today.

We at Perth Civic Trust look forward to collaborating with P&S, Perth Women on Wikipedia - Scotland and others in telling the story of Perth ‘s involvement in the Sufferage and Suffragette movements in the run up to the Centenary.

We unveiled our fifth Perth Civic Trust plaque on August 23rd at 66 Tay St. The plaque marks the site of the original Natural History Museum of Perthshire Society of Natural Science (PSNS) which opened in 1881. The museum was educational and free. Crowds flocked to the opening event and there were upwards of 7,000 visitors in its first nine months.
In addition to exhibits, 66 Tay Street also housed the PSNS Library, perhaps the most complete Victorian natural history library outside of a university or a national library. There are around 2,500 books in the collection, most were published in the 19th century.
By 1885 the museum was becoming overcrowded. Fundraising began and ten years later an extended museum was opened with a dedicated space for displays of Perthshire’s natural history. The running and salary costs of the new museum were difficult for the Society to sustain and the museum and its collections were offered to the community. Perth Town Council took over ownership in 1902 and the museum was run by a joint committee. In 1935 the Town Council opened Perth Museum and Art Gallery in George Street. The old museum in Tay Street closed and its natural history collections and Library were moved to the new building.
When the New Perth Museum opened in 2024 many of the original exhibits moved and are on display there.
PSNS kindly donated the funds for this plaque.

We unveiled our fourth Perth Civic Trust plaque on August 23rd to a group of PSNS and PCT members and local residents in Atholl Place. The plaque commemorates Francis Buchanan White who lived at number 2.
Francis Buchanan White was a founder member and the first President of Perthshire Society of Natural Science (PSNS). He was born here in Perth and studied medicine at Edinburgh University. His passion from childhood was the study of nature. He was PSNS President for 13 years, Secretary for 2 years and editor of its publications for 13 years. White was an expert in hemiptera, the group of insects which includes shield bugs and water boatmen. He described 130 species new to science. From 1881, he devoted himself to botany and became an expert on British willows. He was a pioneer in biological recording, the careful gathering of data on where plants and animals are found in order to understand their distribution. White’s major work was the Flora of Perthshire, a detailed account of the plants which occur naturally in the county. He organised collecting trips and PSNS excursions to gather specimens and record the distribution of plants for this work. Dr White was elected in 1868, a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society and in 1873, a Fellow of the Linnean Society.
PSNS kindly donated the funds for this plaque.

Our Perth and the Jacobites guided walk today was a great success. Sabrina Willekens presented a wonderful sequence of historic accounts interspersed with real human stories.

Two years, two rebellions. The Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745 both involved an assembly of Jacobite forces on the North Inch of Perth.
The muster of 1715 followed the inconclusive battle of Sherrifmuir. James VII “The Old Pretender” arrived in Perth in December 1715 where he reviewed his troops and was so disappointed with what he saw he decided to “abandon the contest as hopeless, due to the reduced state of the army and its deficiency in arms and ammunition”.
Bonnie Prince Charlie entered Perth 30 years later on 3rd September 1745. He reviewed his troops on the North Inch on 7th September 1745 and declared that with training they would make excellent soldiers. The army left Perth on Wednesday the 11th September 1745.

Find out more on our guided walk with Sabrina Willekens this Sunday. Places are still available for the 11am walk.

Did you know that Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed at the Salutation Hotel in Perth in 1745? After the defeat at Culloden a year later, Jacobite sympathisers were hunted down like the unfortunate Colone Alexander Bower mentioned on the plaque in South Street.
