Be More Ruby

Be More Ruby Be More Ruby is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for rhabdomyosarcoma research through the Children's Cancer & Leukaemia Group.

The page is dedicated to Ruby Stewart who lost her life to the disease on January 3rd 2020 aged 6.

As we approach another Childhood Cancer Awareness Month we are feeling very reflective.

9 years since Ruby’s diagnosis.

9 years since our lives changed forever.

We had never heard of in Sept 2017. We were oblivious to it at the time.

Walking onto a children’s cancer ward for the first time as a parent, seeing and hearing all of the children already on treatment… really is a baptism of fire. There is nothing like it. We would not wish it on anyone. Trying to make it seem completely normal and have fun in the playroom whilst always wondering if your child is going to die.

There was a point that we worried Ruby might need her leg amputated. That didn’t happen because it would have made no difference to the cancer spreading.

Then we worried about permanent disability because her foot and lower leg stopped growing due to the treatment.

We would have taken that all day long if it meant she was still here.

This CCAM, can you help us raise awareness and funds? Maybe join in the CCLG 100 miles your way challenge. Maybe sell some gold ribbons.
Maybe buy a wristband, pen or book.
Maybe do your own thing, whatever works for you 😊

There’s lots you can do, and as always, we appreciate every single person and every single penny that contributes to raising funds and awareness.

Thank you🎗️

Ruby’s tree….

A wee beacon of hope, resilience, growth and beauty 🍀🌿

A place to reflect, remember and reminisce 🩷

It’s showing the same strength as our pocket rocket. From tiny acorns… (ok, it’s a cherry not an oak but who cares 🤷‍♀️😆)

We always love a visit to Ruby’s tree. Even a few minutes there brings us closer to her.

Stay strong, little tree. You have some Ruby rocket fuel to feed you for evermore 💪 look how much you’ve grown!

Words to share here don’t seem to come as easily as they once did, which is one of the reasons our page has been quieter than it once was.

We are grateful for the loyalty and all of you who continue to follow us regardless. Thank you 🩷🦄

The words that have had meaning for us recently are those in the poem Ruby’s Grandad asked for at his celebration of life.

Death is nothing at all.

Canon Henry Scott-Holland, 1847-1918

Many of you will be aware of these words.
We’re not sure that death is “nothing at all”, but we remind ourselves that “all is well”.

Both Ruby and her Grandad would tell us to live, to get on, have fun, make the most of whatever time we have.

So I suppose that’s what we’re trying to do, while always keeping both of them in our hearts, and the forefront of our minds.

We will never know 13 year old Ruby. Never see how tall she would grow, never see her develop from a child to a young adult. Never know the person she would become.

We live with our memories. Ruby, and now her Grandad, shaping who we are and what we do. Together and apart, they were two of the happiest people you could know. We will carry that with us always.

Huge thanks to everyone who came along to see us at the Inchture village fete yesterday. You helped to add just over £84 to Ruby’s CCLG fund 🩷

It was lovely to catch up with everyone in the sunshine 🌞

Very grateful to our larger than life special guest, Kev, for bringing the smiles and the banter. It’s always a treat spending time with Ruby’s friend, the author of The Unicorn with the Ruby Horn 🦄

See you again next year!

The first Father’s Day without Ruby’s Grandad 🪽💙

Whether you are the child without your dad, or the dad without your child, we are thinking of you today. We hope the day has been kind to you.

We would like to thank everyone who attended the celebration of Ruby’s Grandad’s life recently. You did him proud. It was the send off he deserved and we’re sure it went just the way he wanted.

We are very grateful for all of the donations received, which have been split equally between Ruby’s CCLG fund and Manorlands hospice.

Life will never be quite the same again. We carry them both in our hearts 💙🩷

Ruby and her Grandad have been reunited 💔

He left us on Sunday, peacefully, at home, with Ruby’s Grandma by his side, just as he wanted.

He will remain a huge part of our family, just as Ruby is, for ever more.

We can just picture the two of them, dancing and laughing, as they used to do. Together again for eternity.

Like Ruby, he leaves a legacy of optimism, fun, and a zest for life.

We will miss him very much, but we’re glad he no longer has to endure the horrible disease that is cancer.

Rest in peace, Dad 💙

Dear Ruby

Your page has been very quiet recently. Posts have slowed, fundraising has paused. It might feel like we’ve gone away.

We haven’t.

Far from it.

The things is, your Grandad isn’t well.

Cancer has returned to him in the same way it returned to you.
Relapsed disease.
No treatment available.

He will be joining you. We’re not sure when, and hope we have a while longer, but the cancer is spreading every day.

Your favourite person is coming back to you.

Unlike you, our amazing girl, your Grandad has lived a long life.
A happy one…
A great one.

He is full of stories, memories and wisdom.

We don’t want him to go, but, like you, we don’t want him to suffer. We know you will be watching, waiting, ready with a big Ruby cuddle for him.

We will be back sometime, but we’re not sure when.

You remain, always, in our hearts 🩷
