Northern National Restoration Group

Northern National Restoration Group a local bus group helping locals Welcome to the Northern National Restoration Group. Our group was founded in 2006 by a group of bus enthusiasts.

Since then, the group has grown into what it is today, with five vehicles, over 10 working members and a large operating facility. Our shared interest is in preserving the transport heritage of the North East of England. Our fleet have previously worked all over the region in the service of Go North East and its predecessors. We aim to exhibit a wide range of immaculately restored vehicles from th

e recent past while educating and demonstrating a wide range of skills and knowledge across the relevant areas. The NNRG currently own five vehicles: Leyland National Mk2s 4681 / UPT681V and 4710 / FTN710W; Volvo B10BLE/Wright Renowns 4855 / R855 PRG and 4898 / V988 ETN; and Scania L94UB/Wright Eclipse Solar 5217 / NK54 NVN. All these vehicles have played a significant part in the North East bus history. The group also has a wide range of friends within the preservation community, some of whom share our facility. You can learn more about our vehicles and our friends by visiting the vehicles page. All the buses are maintained and either being, or have been, restored by members throughout the year. During the rally season a variety of our vehicles are exhibited at rallies across the North East to help represent its transport heritage. As always, the NNRG are keen to hear from people who would like to join us. We are based in a former National Coal Board facility in Philadelphia, Houghton-le-Spring, just off the A1(M) and A19. We are a registered charity (registration number 1193235), and we rely on the generosity of our members and visitors to help fund the restoration and maintenance of our vehicles. If you believe you can help us fundraise, please visit our charity section for more information on how to do so.

🚌 3943 – NK05 GZR JOINS THE NNRG FLEET! 🚌

We’re extremely pleased to announce that Northern National Restoration Group has officially purchased 3943 – NK05 GZR, a Go North East Volvo B7TL with Wright Eclipse Gemini bodywork, and we’re delighted to welcome it into our preservation fleet!

Built in 2005, 3943 has had a long and varied career with Go North East, becoming a familiar sight across the North East.

During its service life, 3943 has worked a fantastic variety of local routes. It was famously associated with the X10, and later spent time in Red Arrows working the X1 between Newcastle and Easington Lane. It has also appeared on services including the 55 between Sunderland and Wingate, 61 to Murton, 21 between Chester-le-Street and Newcastle, 1A towards Whitley Bay and Sunderland Connect service 701.

That extensive local history is what makes 3943 particularly special to us. It isn’t just an old bus — it’s a vehicle that has been part of everyday life for people across the North East. Thousands of passengers will have travelled on vehicles like 3943, whether heading into Newcastle, travelling across Gateshead, Sunderland and County Durham, or simply making their everyday journeys.

For NNRG, the opportunity to acquire 3943 really was a no-brainer. It is exactly the sort of vehicle we want to see preserved, and it makes an excellent addition to our growing fleet. 3943 also represents the end of an era for reliable, traditionally built buses.

The Volvo B7TL and Wright Gemini combination was built to spend years working hard on everyday services, becoming known as dependable workhorses. After more than 20 years of service, 3943 was finally withdrawn from service by Go North East earlier this year, making its preservation all the more important. Rather than seeing another familiar North East bus disappear from our roads for good, we’re delighted to give 3943 a new lease of life in preservation.

Now that 3943 is officially part of NNRG, our members will have the opportunity to get involved with the vehicle and work on bringing it up to the standard we want for preservation. There will be plenty to do, including mechanical work, general maintenance, interior work, cleaning and preservation, giving our members the chance to gain valuable experience while helping save another important piece of North East transport history.

We’re looking forward to giving 3943 the care and attention it deserves and, in time, getting it back out on the road to rallies and events — hopefully bringing back plenty of memories for those who remember seeing it in service.

Welcome to NNRG, 3943! 🚌❤️

It’s rally time again! 🎉

On Bank Holiday Monday, 31st August, we will be heading to Seaburn for the 2026 August Bank Holiday Rally, taking along one of our group member’s privately owned vehicles, 3963 – NK06 JXD.

This one is a particularly special outing for us, as Seaburn will be only the 2nd ever rally for 3963 since entering preservation back in May this year!❤️

For those who may not know the vehicle, 3963 is a 2006 Volvo B7TL fitted with Wright Eclipse Gemini bodywork, originally built for service with Go North East. The bus carries fleet number 3963 and was part of the well-known batch of Volvo B7TL Gemini double-deckers that operated across the North East. It was originally registered as NK55 OLA and later became NK06 JXD. It was allocated to Chester-le-Street/Riverside at various points in its service life.

After many years working passenger services, it’s fantastic to now see 3963 enjoying a new chapter in preservation — and we’re really looking forward to bringing it along to Seaburn for its second rally appearance! 🚍✨

👀 **So, who are we going to see there?**

Are you bringing a vehicle along? Maybe you’re travelling on one of the visiting buses? Or are you simply heading down to Seaburn to enjoy the rally and catch up with friends?

**Let us know in the comments — we’d love to know who we’ll be seeing on the day!** 👇

Hopefully we’ll see plenty of familiar faces and lots of fantastic preserved vehicles at Seaburn! ❤️
