Saturday was another amazing day at our Horsham Collection Point with over 90 hens finding their retirement homes 🩷

Thought we would give you all a little insight as to what goes on behind the scenes with getting these girlies.

Those going to the farm, leave on a Friday afternoon and for Horsham it is generally a long afternoon sitting on the M25 going nowhere very quickly 😂.

Saturday morning is a very early awakening to be on the farm between 4/5 am 🤪 The volunteers then catch, crate and then drive the girlies, often dropping off at collection points on their way back.

The hens are rested, given time to eat and drink and observed for any struggling and then the (you) rehomers arrive 🎉

The last photo is our lovely farmer who came out of the barn last weekend with the last (but not least) little hen 🩷

We’d like to thank each and everyone that offers our Fresh Start hens the luxury of that new start 🎉 We NEVER leave a hen behind!

Horsham is open again this weekend, these hens will be coming out of a caged environment.

Today I was made aware of this little Cockerel that had been seen for at least 5 days fending for himself, I’d like to say he was lost ….. 🙄

I had hoped from all the comments and offers of help on the post that he was safe, I had messaged the lady that had posted earlier in the day and she got back to me early evening saying he was still there …..

No tea for hubby (until a lot later lol) I took one of our rescue hens (still looking for a home 😉) some tasty treats and a net. It was obvious as I turned down a lane ….. perfect place to release (dump!!!!) a cockerel 🤬 not much traffic etc. (no one to see) The lovely couple who’s property he was staying close to, came out to meet me and the little guy was there.

I popped a little rescue hen down (awaiting a home 😉) scattered some treats and within seconds he was there telling her what he had, he did a little dance and popped up on her basket. I waited a while for him to gain confidence and slowly got the net ready …. Took my chance and missed him 🙈 on the second attempt I missed him again but got him on the follow through lol …. My heart and his were pumping but he was safe 💙

This little chap has scaly mite, which he is already receiving treatment for and has a swollen toe.

All I’m seeing at the moment is people desperately trying to rehome cockerels, if you hatch you will end up with boys !!!! If you can’t be responsible!!! Don’t hatch !!!

This chap will be cared for and responsibly rehomed at some point in the future 💙

🎉MAY DATES🎉

Exciting times (especially for the hens) we have 2 dates in May. Our first date is the 9th May and the second is the 16th ….. the 16th will be hens from a caged farm.

We have a group of resilient, lovely hens ready to leave the cage behind and start their lives as cherished companions.

These girls are coming from a cage farm environment. Because they’ve spent their lives in such confined spaces, they haven't had the chance to build up their strength. When you first bring them home, you will notice weak legs and swollen abdomens.

The Good News: With a little time, fresh air, and space to move, these issues typically right themselves! It just takes a bit of patience and TLC.

Settling Your New Hens
To give them the best start, please keep the following in mind:

• Safety First: Keep them away from any roosters or more dominant birds until they are physically strong enough to hold their own.
• Surprising Resilience: Despite their tough start, these ladies are still laying eggs and are incredibly eager to bond with their new humans.

Could You Be Their Forever Home?

These hens have been through a lot, but they have so much love to give. We are looking for patient, kind-hearted adopters who understand that the transition from a cage to a garden is a big step.

If you’d like to give them a forever home, please register on our website www.freshstartforhens.co.uk
