Good to meet with reps from Unite, GMB, SIPTU and TSSA about the challenges facing Translink. While we still await resolving the budget issues, it's clear that Translink, which should be a success story, has been squeezed by chronic underfunding, especially since its reserves have been raided and the fuel rebate subsidy was removed.

We need to be investing heavily in our transport systems in Northern Ireland and it seems ironic that, with our new Prime Minister talking both about 'Manchester-isms and Busses' at every opportunity and with significant investment going into public transport in the rest of our nation, Translink is being squeezed for £6M.

There's a further irony that, while the Department for Infrastructure wastes close on a quarter of a billion pounds on a road where they haven't even managed to lay a square metre of tarmac, wer'e currently talking about cutting bus and rail services after 10 p.m.

Just how does this make sense?

We support the Unions and their call to get the Department for Infrastructure to properly fund Translink, and it needs to be a role of any future Executive to make sure that we have a transport system fit for the next couple of decades.
