The Honesty Jar Community ReUse Project run by Volunteers. Open 10-4 every day except Wednesdays. Donations close 3pm We are a small not-for-profit constituted group.

Our main focus is providing a community resource. That is the reason behind the Honesty Jar… so that regardless of financial means, everyone still has access to clothes, school uniform, books, shoes, toys, household textiles and kitchenware. We are also passionate about reuse and repair to reduce landfill and strain on resources. A lot of organisations similar to us receive large amounts of grant funding, we are mostly self funded through visitors generous contributions into the jar. We also provide community resources in the way of experiences… We run a donations based Santas grotto, community music events, mental health training courses for local families and carers, repair workshops and family friendly craft workshops in school holidays. There is more information in detail on our website, including reviews from local residents and organisations we have connections with - doctors surgeries, refuges, church groups, local prisons, special needs and refugee support groups. ♻️ DONATION GUIDELINES ♻️ We’re really sorry, but The Honesty Jar is no longer able to accept donations of electrical items.

Unfortunately, we simply don’t have the storage capacity, and the checking, storing and logistics involved in safely rehoming electricals have become unsustainable for our little project.

💚 Please don’t throw useful electricals away! If you have something working or repairable, there are still plenty of other options. Try your nearest Repair Café, local News & Views or community groups, Freecycle and other online giving sites. The Emporium in Sturminster Newton also accepts electrical items in good condition.

Small electrical items can also be recycled through some kerbside collection services, depending on your local council, or you can take electricals to your local household recycling centre.

This last option is particularly important for broken or non-working electricals. Household residents can usually recycle these through their council service, whereas The Honesty Jar has to pay commercial waste charges to dispose of items we cannot rehome.

Please help us by not leaving electrical items at the shop or donations desk. 🙏

🎃👻 Something SPOOKY is coming to The Honesty Jar! 👻🎃
For two days this October, our Fundraising Office is being transformed into a Halloween Spooktacular Pop-Up Shop, packed with all things creepy, kooky and wonderfully spooky!

Even better, your visit helps raise vital funds to keep The Honesty Jar, our independent, volunteer-powered community reuse project, running. So you can get Halloween ready, reuse some fabulous pre-loved treasures AND support a local project at the same time. ♻️🧡

♻️ HOW THE HONESTY JAR HAS CHANGED 🙌 When we first started, we received less than 10 tonnes of donations a year. People brought things in, other people took them away, with little excess stock.

Today, thanks to the incredible support of our community, we receive almost 100 tonnes of donations every year! 🌍💚

That’s a huge success for reuse and landfill reduction, but it has also created new challenges.

More people are using us to pass on items they no longer need, but not enough items are leaving to match what arrives. This means we now spend a huge amount of time, energy and money sorting, storing and rehoming surplus stock.

We now:
📦 Rent off-site storage for seasonal items
🏠 Operate additional sorting space
🚛 Transport donations to other charities and support groups
🤝 Work with organisations helping families and vulnerable people
♻️ Pay commercial disposal costs for items we can’t rehome

What once cost around £40 per week to run now costs well over £100 every day.

As a community project, we face an important question:

Do we heavily restrict donations, meaning more reusable items may end up in landfill?

Or can we work together to generate enough income to continue accepting and redistributing as much as possible?
