The Honesty Jar

The Honesty Jar Community ReUse Project run by Volunteers. Open 10-4 every day except Wednesdays. Donations close 3pm We are a small not-for-profit constituted group.

Our main focus is providing a community resource. That is the reason behind the Honesty Jar… so that regardless of financial means, everyone still has access to clothes, school uniform, books, shoes, toys, household textiles and kitchenware. We are also passionate about reuse and repair to reduce landfill and strain on resources. A lot of organisations similar to us receive large amounts of grant

funding, we are mostly self funded through visitors generous contributions into the jar. We also provide community resources in the way of experiences… We run a donations based Santas grotto, community music events, mental health training courses for local families and carers, repair workshops and family friendly craft workshops in school holidays. There is more information in detail on our website, including reviews from local residents and organisations we have connections with - doctors surgeries, refuges, church groups, local prisons, special needs and refugee support groups. I hope this gives you some background information, feel free to ask questions. Thank you so much for your interest. Best wishes, Samantha, BearCat Collective

🌿🐴 GREEN SCYTHE FAIR UPDATE 🐴🌿 We’re now over halfway through set-up week and the showground is really starting to come alive! 💚

The main marquees are up, signs are being painted, scythes are being sharpened, compost loos are being built, and everywhere you look there are volunteers working hard to transform empty fields into a vibrant community event.

We’ve now erected our SwapShop tent and the ever-popular Toy Teepee! ⛺🧸♻️

Tomorrow’s mission is to fill them with treasures ready to be shared, to raise funds, and to get everything prepared for our family craft workshops using natural and recycled materials. 🎨🌿

One of the most wonderful things about Green Scythe is seeing what can be achieved when a community comes together. From horse-drawn carts transporting equipment around the site to teams of volunteers lending their skills and energy, there’s a real sense of cooperation, sustainability, creativity and purpose.

Check out the host of skill share workshops on Saturday…
https://www.greenfair.org.uk

On Sunday, this field will be buzzing with people, music, crafts, conversations, learning and fun for all ages.

If you’re coming along, please pop by and say hello! We’d love to see some familiar faces, share some treasures, and welcome new visitors to the wonderful world of reuse. 💚♻️

See you on Sunday!

📦♻️ BROUGHT CARDBOARD? PLEASE TAKE SOME TOO! ♻️📦 We always receive far more cardboard than we can use ourselves.

Unfortunately, we have to pay commercial rates to dispose of the surplus cardboard, which takes valuable funds away from running the project. 💚

🚗 If you're dropping off cardboard, could you take some away too?

Cardboard is fantastic for:
🌱 W**d suppression in the garden
🪱 Composting
🍓 Mulching around fruit bushes and veg beds
🛤 Creating pathways between raised beds
♻️ Recycling at home

It's completely free to take, and every bundle that leaves with a visitor helps save us money and keeps resources in use.

Please help us spread the word to gardeners, allotment holders and anyone with a compost heap!

Together we can keep cardboard out of the waste stream and put it to good use. 💚♻️

💚♻️ DID YOU KNOW? ♻️💚 Sixteen years ago, long before The Honesty Jar existed, our founder Samantha was already running community reuse spaces.

Back then there was no permanent shop, no sorting room and no storage containers. Just a simple idea: good-quality resources shouldn't go to waste, and nobody should be excluded because they can't afford something.

Those early projects popped up in village halls, fields, festivals and community events. The principle was exactly the same as it is today:

💚 Pay what you feel
♻️ Reuse what already exists
🤝 Support one another
🌍 Reduce waste

Six years ago that vision found a permanent home when The Honesty Jar opened its doors in Henstridge.

But this week, things are coming full circle...

The Honesty Jar is going on tour! 🚚♻️

This weekend marks our first pop-up event of the year at the wonderful Green Scythe Fair near Langport, where Samantha, her family and a fantastic team of other volunteers are helping to prepare the site.

And this isn't your average event setup.

In keeping with the fair's low-impact, community-focused ethos, much of the work is done with HORSEPOWER! 🐴

There are currently horses walking between local storage sites and the showground, transporting infrastructure that has been carefully stored over winter and is now being brought back to life.

Across the site, volunteers are busy putting up fences, signs and marquees, building compost toilets, installing water systems, creating fire points and preparing everything needed for a safe and welcoming weekend.

It's hard work, but there's something rather magical about watching a community come together to build an event from the ground up.

If you're visiting the Green Scythe Fair this weekend, please come and say hello! 👋

You'll find us at the Swap Shop, and we'll also be running family-friendly craft activities using natural and recycled materials in the children's area. 🎨🌿

Every penny raised at these pop-up events helps support The Honesty Jar back home in Henstridge, where we now rehome around 100 tonnes of donations every year.

What started as a simple idea in a field 16 years ago is still growing, still evolving, and still powered by the same belief:

💚 Communities are stronger when we share resources
💚 Good things deserve a second chance
💚 Kindness is something worth investing in

We hope to see some familiar faces this weekend! 🌿🐴♻️
