Whilst this may not look all that exciting*, appearances can be deceiving! Each of these envelopes and bundles contains thousands of seeds, all carefully harvested and selected by local growers from plants that defied the odds and thrived under the harshest summer conditions on record in the UK.
You see, seeds are our insurance policy.
Each of these seeds contains the genetic memory of this growing season, so if faced with another summer drought in the future, the chances are the plants produced by these seeds will thrive. But what if we have a cold, soggy summer, I hear you cry! Well, then we collect the seed from the plants that thrived in those conditions; another genetic memory, another layer of crucial adaptability, all needed if we are to increase resiliency in the face of our changing climate.
At the moment we have a lot of flower seed, so we're packing up those hardy annuals that can be sown in the autumn (think sweet peas, nigella, poppies, hollyhocks, cornflower, etc), so hopefully by the end of this week the flower tray will be fully restocked at the seed library. You might have to wait until next week for veg seed, but we'll keep you posted.
So there you are, we're still here, just buried under bags of seed, beige envelopes, and school uniform that my daughter has probably outgrown over the summer holidays. I should really check that. More thrilling updates soon!
*it's very exciting for me, as it means I've finally got round to sorting all the seeds and can get into my bedroom without tripping over bags of seeds, hurrah!
