Well, the past 24 hours have been WILD! 😅

Thank you to everyone who responded to our story about the dumping of the Seed Library Garden. It's all been quite overwhelming, but it has restored my faith in humanity somewhat, so thank you.

If we ever get any kind of updated response from Somerset Council, I shall let you know. But don't hold your breath.

In the meantime, whilst the Seed Library Garden may be no more, the Seed Library is still very much alive and kicking. For those of you new to us, it's our free permanent seed swap based inside Frome Library. People grow the plants, donate the seeds, we sort and pack them, and then pop them in the library for others to grow ("borrow") and start the cycle all over again.

Since 2022, over 6000 packets of seed have been distributed in this way, all for free, all in the name of food and seed sovereignty.

In between reading all of your messages of support yesterday, we packed up 50+ packets of seed, meaning the other seed tray is back in business, hurrah! So pop in today for lots of fantastic pollinator-friendly flower seed, heritage beans, and other seedy goodness. It's all free*, you don't have to sign up to anything, just take what you need.

*If you'd like to make a monetary donation, though, please pop it in the donation box or donate online to Frome Birth Talk, whom we will be sending our donations to for the coming month. Their vital work is literally saving lives, but they desperately need more funding to do so, so please consider supporting them if you are able to.

Whilst this may not look all that exciting*, appearances can be deceiving! Each of these envelopes and bundles contains thousands of seeds, all carefully harvested and selected by local growers from plants that defied the odds and thrived under the harshest summer conditions on record in the UK.

You see, seeds are our insurance policy.

Each of these seeds contains the genetic memory of this growing season, so if faced with another summer drought in the future, the chances are the plants produced by these seeds will thrive. But what if we have a cold, soggy summer, I hear you cry! Well, then we collect the seed from the plants that thrived in those conditions; another genetic memory, another layer of crucial adaptability, all needed if we are to increase resiliency in the face of our changing climate.

At the moment we have a lot of flower seed, so we're packing up those hardy annuals that can be sown in the autumn (think sweet peas, nigella, poppies, hollyhocks, cornflower, etc), so hopefully by the end of this week the flower tray will be fully restocked at the seed library. You might have to wait until next week for veg seed, but we'll keep you posted.

So there you are, we're still here, just buried under bags of seed, beige envelopes, and school uniform that my daughter has probably outgrown over the summer holidays. I should really check that. More thrilling updates soon!

*it's very exciting for me, as it means I've finally got round to sorting all the seeds and can get into my bedroom without tripping over bags of seeds, hurrah!

Next week is Libraries Change Lives Week (1st - 7th June), 's annual advocacy campaign, capturing and celebrating the impact of libraries.

As part of it, Friends of Frome Library (FOFL) are asking people what the library means to them and to share their fondest library memories. It doesn't necessarily need to be about Frome Library, they want to celebrate all libraries, but as proud FOFLs we thought we'd get in on the act and share some of our fondest memories of the early days of setting up the seed library at Frome Library with a few pics.

1, It worked! Our very first seed donations back in 2022.
2, "Why don't you start a gardening club here? Do whatever you want, just don't use glitter"...Sprouts is born.
3, Encouraged by the librarians, we opened the seed library garden
4, The time Kerry dressed up as mycelium and confused all the Sprouts at their under-5s halloween party.

We feel incredibly fortunate to call Frome Library our home.

When life gives you lettuce,...barter them for eggs!

Our lettuce has been fantastic, but there's only so much we can eat. So we exchanged one for a few eggs from some neighbouring chickens, and ta dah, the Veg Patch rhubarb cake was born, just in time for a visit from who dropped by to chat to us about the exciting plans for the new .project skatepark and hear from the kids and their parents. Thank you for giving them the opportunity to share their experiences and thoughts on the space 🙏

Also on the menu, rhubarb fizz. Soon to be replaced with elderflower bubbles and lilac fizz. It's the season of the fizz!

Another top-up of the trays today, with lots of heat loving fruit and veg; cucumber, melon, and a couple of different squashes, including 'Tromba d'Albenga' (also known as Tromboncino) and Jumbo Pink Banana squash (pictured here in 2019 in my yet-to-be-born daughter's cot wearing the first item of clothing we ever bought her. Aah, memories).

Also, a couple of different globe onions, kale, chard, broccoli, and Dwarf French beans.

Lots of new seeds in the trays today, including Slovakian sweet pepper, fenugreek, borlotti beans, field beans, cucumber, pumpkin, Brussels sprouts, Latvian soup peas, and these locally saved Dwarf French Beans. Expertly shelled by the Veg Patch kids, then clumsily dropped on the floor by me.

It's a double whammy of Earth Day and the first day of Seed Week today, so what better way to celebrate than topping up our seed tray. That's right, we have more than just seed potatoes in stock now, hurrah!

Edibles include, Spicy Salad Leaf mix, Carrots, Brussels Sprouts, Peas (a few different varieties), Dwarf French Beans, Tomatoes, Cucumber, Onion and Land Cress, we're still very low on flower seed but we have French Marigolds, giant Alliums and Morning Glory seed available.

Any monetary donations received during Seed Week (22nd-29th) will be donated towards 's campaign, with donations received doubled by 's Earth Raise campaign, so raid your piggy banks.

These 5 bags are the last of the mammoth seed potato donation (125kg!!!), kindly provided by Thank you to everyone who popped along to the library and grabbed a bag, we'd love to see photos of your harvests/potato salads come the summer, so please feel free to tag us.

We're back from our holidays, which can only mean one thing, SPUDS ARE BACK!

We've just dropped off another 10kg or so of Casablanca seed potatoes at the seed library, so if you want to give growing potatoes a try, pop down to the library. We'll do another drop-off on Wednesday, and then that'll be it, so be quick!

Well, would you believe it? Our first delivery of the mega seed potato donation has all found new homes! That's almost 100kg of spuds!!! Thank you to everyone who answered the potato call, I was genuinely shocked to receive the email from library Dave this afternoon.

I'm currently in Scotland (where all these lovely seed potatoes came from, but i'm not here to look at tatties, honest), but my lovely neighbour is going to break into my house and deliver a few bags of Albert Bartlett Elfe seed potatoes tomorrow, and then the remainder of potatoes (we'll only have Casablanca left) will be delivered on the 20th.
