Been a busy VC Saturday.

Lots going on in Haverfordwest and the VC teams have been out and about.

Speak to a veteran has been very successful in with the mobile museum getting lots of attention with its military artifacts.

The Pembrokeshire veterans breakfast at had the VC mini bus deployed and Waldo staff making everyone very welcome 🙏 Thanks To Myles for driving and Gareth for sorting.

On the riverside Haverfordwest The VC showcasing art in the new gallery with RAF veteran Mark hosting the public throughout the day.

Charles, Donna, Phil, Rose, Lucy, Nia and team in Waldos doing duck selling and jewellery workshops in a very busy Waldos lounge this afternoon. Even Armed Forces Liaison Officer Hayley supporting us and many Pembrokeshire families.

Through out the night many pupils from with our veteran Pete giving a talk on the experience of homelessness slept out. Amazingly the pupils and Former military staff of the VC High school have been raising money for our charity.

And... the Waldos duck race on the river!

What an amazing community!

The VC Gallery is exploring more tailored support within the Armed Forces community through the development of a new peer-led Veterans Cancer Recovery, Family Support and Bereavement Programme.

Working alongside statutory services, GP clusters and specialist cancer care providers across the third sector in Pembrokeshire and West Wales, we aim to create a clearer pathway of support for Armed Forces veterans and their families who are affected by cancer. Through collaboration, early intervention and community engagement, we hope to ensure that people receive the right support at the right time, alongside access to mental health counselling and peer mentoring.

With six pillars of support, we will launch an offer designed to help our Armed Forces community navigate some of life's most challenging circumstances with compassion, understanding and practical assistance.

The Six Pillars of Support:

Peer Support and Veteran Mentoring – connecting individuals with others who have shared experiences and understand the unique culture of military life.

Mental Health Counselling – providing access to trauma-informed counselling and emotional wellbeing support.

Family Support – recognising the impact of cancer on partners, children and wider family networks, ensuring they are not facing these challenges alone.

Bereavement Support – offering guidance, compassionate listening and ongoing support following the loss of a loved one.

Signposting and Navigation – helping veterans and families access statutory services, GP referrals, specialist cancer services and financial advice more easily.

Community Activities and Recovery Opportunities – using creativity, social connection, nature-based activities and community engagement to reduce isolation and promote wellbeing.

Approximately 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. The scale of this challenge is immense, and our contribution will be small in comparison to the work already being undertaken by specialist services. However, at The VC Gallery, we believe there is a role for community-driven, peer-led support.

One again we had the opportunity to visit our friends at Helping Hands Crundale this Monday morning.

Charlie, Donna and Nia spent a lovely Morning with Lorna and her compassionate team delivering a hands on Jewellery workshop.

Everyone got stuck in making bookmarks, earrings and some bespoke rings from vintage cutlery.

It’s always a pleasure spending time with everyone at Helping and hands and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Georgia O'Keeffe's Flowers as a Breathing Meditation for Anxiety
How painting and repainting nature might have alleviated O'Keeffe's anxiety ...

Although she came into her own in New Mexico. O’Keeffe had instinctively gravitated towards nature for decades. In 1908 she won an award that allowed her to spend a summer at Lake George. Perhaps this draw to nature was a way to slow down.

Learning to slow down, get grounded in her body, and immerse herself in the small pleasures of the world around her surely helped O’Keeffe with her anxiety (as breathing and grounding exercises are one of the most commonly prescribed simple treatments for the condition.) Maintaining this sense of calm was also critical to her success as a painter. In particular, we see this in the details of her famous flower paintings, so often lauded for their ripe sensuality.
