Publican Georgina Ford at The Plough Skellingthorpe Lincs, has strengthened the pubs’ role as a vital social hub with the launch of a new community café.

A room adjacent to the bar has been transformed into a designated community café area where local people can meet, socialise and make connections.

It has already proved popular, attracting new people into the pub and encouraging young, old, families and groups to come together to help combat loneliness and social isolation.

This has been made possible with a grant from Pub is The Hub, supported by the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade.

The Halfway, Tal-y-Coed Pub & Community Hub, is expanding its role at the heart of its rural Welsh community by offering new creative, social and wellbeing opportunities for local people.

Publicans Rhiannon Metters and Jason James have made it their mission to help tackle rural isolation and provide meaningful support for residents who often live and work alone.

By expanding use of the upgraded marquee to host a wide range of activities to support local people and businesses.

A Kent pub’s new community pétanque pitch is offering an accessible game to local people to help support their wellbeing.

Community-owned pub The George, Bethersden near Ashford, is enhancing its role at the heart of its local community even further with the new pitch which aims to help bring people of all ages together, including people with a disability, through a fun activity.

An exciting range of community services and activities are already on offer at The George, including a community café, which hosts a weekly Knit & Natter group and Chatty Café session.

The new pétanque pitch, which has been built at the end of the pub’s b**r garden is already being enjoyed by a wide range of local people.

Publicans Paul and Christina at the The Hawk & Buckle Inn have further strengthened the role of the pub at the heart of its local community with a new accessible and wildlife-friendly community garden.

The community garden at the pub in Llannefydd, near Denbigh in Conwy, which includes an edible garden, has created a wonderful space to help bring locals together through a shared interest and to grow produce for the pub’s menu and for local people to enjoy.

The pair, who opened the pub last June, plan to use the garden for ongoing community planting and gardening activities.

Publican Jason Watson is strengthening the role of The Bluebell Inn near Spalding, with a new outdoor stage, bar and pizza oven designed to bring local people together and support events ranging from live music to comedy nights.

The new outdoor area has proved to be a major success throughout the summer, hosting everything from live music performances, comedy events and community gatherings such as a c***r and sausage festival. It has also become home to regular events, including open-air bingo nights, summer grill afternoons and barbecue sessions.

As well as extending its appeal to more families it has also seen a boost in its customer base with up to 300 people turning up for events in the b**r garden area.

Publicans Rachel and Adam Miller took over the Cross Keys Dilham in March 2026, with a vision to making the pub a welcoming destination for locals and visitors.

A key part of their vision was to make the pub accessible and welcoming to all customers, including families.

Skelton Black Lion Pub & Hub, near Ripon in North Yorkshire, has created a new community kitchen garden that aims to grow both food and friendships.

The community-owned pub is enhancing its role at the heart of its local community by establishing the community kitchen garden to help bring locals together through a shared interest and to grow produce for the community-owned pub’s shop.

The new community kitchen garden at The Black Lion which opened last year and is community-owned, features several planters and a greenhouse to help support growing throughout the seasons.

Plants and cuttings from allotment holders in the village are helping to get growing underway in the garden, which has been established on land behind the pub.

The garden will be looked after ongoing by the pub’s volunteers, as well as attendees of a new gardening club that is being set up.

🍻 BACKING HOSPITALITY IN HALIFAX AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY ☕️

From Halifax town centre and Sowerby Bridge to communities across our outer villages, our pubs, cafés and restaurants are at the heart of local life.

As your MP and the Minister for the Future of Work, I am proud to have launched a new £10 million Hospitality Grant Scheme to support venues like these in Halifax and across the country.

The funding will support projects that:

🏪 Help new hospitality businesses get started

🔑 Bring empty premises back into use

👩‍🍳 Give people the training and skills to begin careers in hospitality

🤝 Help trusted venues adapt, grow and offer more to their communities

More than £3 million will go to Pub is The Hub, which helps pubs in rural and disadvantaged areas introduce services such as village shops, community cafés, play areas and arts activities.

This comes alongside a 20% cut to business rates bills for pubs, clubs and live music venues from next April, saving the typical pub around £1,000 next year.

Hospitality businesses make an enormous contribution to Halifax. They create jobs, give many young people their first experience of work and provide places where our communities can come together.

I know that many hospitality businesses are still under real pressure and that there is much more to do. I will continue making the case across government for the support our local pubs, cafés and restaurants need.

I am proud that, as Halifax’s MP, I have been able to bring this scheme forward in government.
