Over the past few weeks, we have made considerable progress with the vital refurbishment of our Nelson Street inpatient unit. We are so grateful to everyone, internal and external, who have dedicated their time to help us complete this project.

Those who are on our mailing list or on our Facebook channel may have already seen some behind-the-scenes updates; for those of you who haven’t. Here is a quick round-up;

✔Rooms and corridors cleared, walls stripped, replastered and painting in progress
✔Flooring removed and refit in progress
✔Wet room repairs and refit in progress
✔Wall knocked through in office area to create a larger space
✔Vital roof repairs to fix damage and prevent further leaks in the Duty Room in progress
✔Large store replastered, floored and storage fitted

These improvements are an important investment in our hospice building, helping us create a safe, comfortable and welcoming environment for patients, families and our teams. We’ll continue to share regular updates as the refurbishment progresses, so you can see how your support is helping us improve our facilities for the future.

On this National Grief Awareness Day, we wanted to highlight our partnership with St Columba’s High School in Gourock.

The main aim of this project is to provide guidance to teachers so they are able to best support pupils both pre- and post-bereavement.

Here is Kerry Miller from St Columba’s to tell you more about the project 💜

During the temporary closure of our Nelson Street building and while helping with our refurbishment plans, the inpatient unit team have been busy taking part in a range of internal training sessions to help further their learning and development 📝

This week’s training focused on building staff confidence and skills when speaking to patients and their families.

One of this week's awareness sessions highlighted the needs of young people visiting the inpatient unit. These sessions were hosted by Laura and Janice, our Children & Young People’s Support Practitioners, to improve our staff's confidence in speaking with children and their families, both pre- and post-bereavement.

Another training session was hosted by Monica, our Palliative Nurse Consultant. The team focused on having open conversations around deteriorating health, shared decision-making, and treatment planning.

Investing in our staff helps us continue to learn, develop our skills and ensure we offer the highest quality of care to the Inverclyde community and beyond 💜

Did you know that you might be receiving support from Ardgowan Hospice without even knowing?

In 2023, Dr Narmadha Kali Vanan, one of our Specialty Doctors, set up an award-winning dedicated helpline for Health and Social Care Professionals working in Inverclyde who were seeking Specialist Palliative advice.

This helpline allows District Nurses (DNs), Physiotherapists, Doctors, Speech and Language Therapists, or Professional Carers, to call us for specialist support if they have noticed a deterioration in a long-time client’s condition.

Since the beginning of this year, Dr Narmadha and our community team have taken over 300 calls, helping to support health care staff and patients across Inverclyde and beyond.

During the temporary closure of our Nelson Street building and while helping with our refurbishment plans, the inpatient unit team have been busy taking part in a range of internal training sessions to help further their learning and development 📝

Some of the sessions we have had over the past week included our Advanced Clinical Nurse Specialists, Monica and Gemma, delivering Specialist Palliative Care workshops, where staff focused on learning in more depth about life shortening conditions and complex palliative situations.

Our Wellbeing team also took some time to run team-building sessions. Our Counsellor Geraldine, who is one of the few people qualified within Inverclyde to host Level 1 Trauma training, helped towards our goal of Ardgowan Hospice being a Trauma Informed Workplace by holding a workshop for staff members.

Investing in our staff helps us continue to learn, develop our skills and ensure we offer the highest quality of care to the Inverclyde community and beyond 💜
