When it's hot, it's tempting to jump straight in - but UK water is freezing, even on a really hot day. Cold water shock can take your breath away, make you panic and stop you swimming - even if you're a strong swimmer.

If you get into trouble :

➡ Tilt your head back with ears submerged
➡ Relax and try to control your breathing
➡ Use your hands to help you stay afloat
➡ It’s ok if your legs sink, we all float differently
➡ Shout for help once you're calm

Stay safe with your friends:

➡ Don't swim alone
➡ Inflatables - use them in pools only, they can blow out to sea
➡ Don't jump into unknown water - you can't see what's underneath
➡ If your friends are hyping you up to jump, it's ok to say no
➡ If a friend appears to be struggling, don't jump in after them - call 999 and ask for the Coastguard

If you see a wildfire - call 999 immediately.

Stay safe, tell the caller the location, size and any other relevant information (download what3words to your phone to help Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service locate the fire quickly).

REMINDER: The scheme is open access for young people born between 01/09/2009 - 31/08/2014.

Location and activity details will be posted shortly.

If you request a bus pass at registration, this can be collected from Gosport Borough Council Reception, Town Hall, High Street, PO12 1EB between 13/07/2026 – 22/07/2026 09:00 – 16:30.
