"Peacock butterfly voted the nation's favourite butterfly" in a people's vote organised by the wonderful Butterfly Conservation trust. Glorious! Sometimes people ask us why we have a lot of nettles at Withymead. Well, peacock butterflies lay their eggs on nettles, and when the caterpillars hatch the plants provide their food, until they pupate and emerge as butterflies in July and August. We love being a nursery to the natural world!

Join us and the Thames Valley Environmental Records Centre for a special morning to chat about Mend the Gap's Signature Trees project. You'll learn tips on identifying signature tree species at Withymead, such as our native black poplar. There's a tour with our warden, a chance to look at herbarium specimens and planted trees and an opportunity for you to join in with mapping and recording the tree planting that’s been happening in the area. Ideal for those wishing to learn something new, further their skills or who are already confident in tree IDs.
Please note that to protect wildlife and habitats in the reserve, dogs (other than assistance dogs) are not permitted. Entry to the reserve is free but donations are more than welcome. See you later!

Events | Citizen Science Sunday, 10am - 1pm TODAY Sun 3 May
Help! Our warden has forgotten what species are on the reserve!
Join him at 10.30am to help refresh his - and your - memory on how to use the iRecord App, and go on a guided walk recording what you can find on the reserve.
The reserve is open 10am - 5pm, and we recommend downloading the iRecord App on your smartphone before arriving.
Make the most of your visit by bringing a picnic and refreshments. We have wonderful places to sit, as well as our waterfront deck, tree log seating, and hides for quiet watching and waiting for wildlife to appear.
