Programme Highlight 🍓 STRAWBERRIES (dir. Marrakchi Laila)

Hasna and Meriem leave their native Morocco to work as seasonal laborers picking strawberries in Southern Spain. Hoping to return home and provide a better life for their families, their dreams clash with a harsh reality: abuse, harassment, and undignified working conditions at the hands of their employers.

The bond they share as a unified sisterhood, empowers them to rise above their situation, despite the risks that are needed to advocate for their rights. They must make the difficult decision to speak out against a powerful patriarchal system, risking everything for their own personal justice.

Presented in partnership with Take One Action Film Festivals.

Welcome to “the Tropics”! Where the paradoxes of neo-colonial daily life are at work in a suffocating economic and health context.

Programme Highlight 🌌 Spotlight Geração 80: LUCIA IN THE SKY WITH TRAFFIC LIGHTS (dir. Ery Claver)

Sat 31 Oct, 15:30 Filmhouse Edinburgh

Lucia is constantly ostracised and silenced by a sexist society that never considers her opinions, wishes or desires. She is the silent account of a woman confined to a role or function without the right to be, think or express opinions. She is merely a corporeal existence, used only to satisfy the needs and wants of others.

The Spotlight: Geração 80 programme offers a rare opportunity to engage the collective’s distinctive contribution to contemporary African cinema through films that reflect their commitment to innovative storytelling, visual experimentation and authentic representations of Angolan life and culture.

Programme Highlight 🌑 THE PROPHET (dir. Ique Langa)

Sat 31 Oct, 13:00 Filmhouse Edinburgh

In the village of Manjacaze, Mozambique, Pastor Hélder struggles with a fading faith. His small congregation dwindles, his sermons fail to inspire, and his wife Helena’s prayers for a child go unanswered.

Desperate for meaning and success, Hélder turns to a Sangoma, a traditional healer who connects him to spirits promising power and miracles. At first, things seem to work, Hélder’s congregation grows and people hail him as a prophet. But his newfound powers come with a darker cost: the spirits begin to demand human sacrifices.

Haunted by guilt and trapped by his own choices, Hélder must confront his inner demons and the limits of faith, redemption and truth. Told through the voice of Ernesto, a dead man turned ancestor, The Prophet (O Profeta), is a haunting and poetic meditation on belief, guilt and spiritual transformation.
