In 2020, The Stove’s original under-30s program, blueprint100, underwent a period of consultation and development. Through conversations with past participants we identified what we really need as young and emerging creative professionals – Creative Spaces is the result. In 2021, we’ll be launching new opportunities for you to get involved – from 2 new paid Associate Artist roles, chances to network and converse digitally, and our bimonthly Creative Space led by Jenna Macrory.

As we are getting ready for the Rood Fair, it is time to hear more about our artist commission! 🎡✨

We are excited to introduce Caitlin Wells (Caitlin Wells Photography) who will explore young people's experience of the fair through photography.

Her project will be about the Dumfries and Galloway Rood and Spring Fairs, looking at both their history and what they mean today. The fairs are full of memories, lights, sounds, excitement, and even a bit of rebellion.
We want to see how young people experience the fairs now. By taking photos on their phones, they can show what the fair looks and feels like to them, and how they connect with it.

Do YOU want to share your experience of the fair? 🫵📸

‼️ There is still time to apply for our latest artist commission ‼️

The Stove Network is looking for proposals from emerging creatives (aged 16-30) to explore and creatively interpret the relationship between young people in Dumfries and the town’s historic Rood and Spring Fairs.

This commission is an exciting opportunity to engage with the people and cultural landscape of Dumfries and offers an extensive range of approaches. From performance and song to film, photography and more, anything is possible and we would love to hear your ideas and creative visions!

The commission can be whatever you want it to be, so long as it engages directly with the impact that the Spring and Rood Fairs have on Dumfries, and that in the process of developing your creative output you consult directly with young people in Dumfries. This year's Rood Fair takes place between the 25th & 29th September, so there are ideal opportunities to dive right in and engage in activity around the fair itself.

⏰ The extended deadline is Monday 8th September at 12 noon.

📢 Opportunity 📢

Are you an emerging creative aged 16 to 30?

The Stove Network is looking for your proposals to explore and creatively interpret the relationship between young people in Dumfries and the town’s historic Rood and Spring Fairs.

These fairs are one of Scotland’s oldest civic traditions, embedded in the town’s cultural fabric for centuries. Yet as Dumfries evolves, how do these traditional events continue to resonate with the town’s younger generations? What memories are being created now—and what futures can be imagined for the fairs?

The creative practitioner will be supported by The Stove’s creative team and Fair Scotland to develop a final creative outcome in any form, which will be part of an ongoing dialogue about belonging, identity, heritage, and cultural life in Dumfries.

Does this sound like the perfect project for you or are you simply curious to find out more? Read all the details here:
