A surprise visitor on the path at Potteric Carr! 🐍

Our reserve team recently spotted this beautiful grass snake soaking up the surroundings before quietly slithering back into the undergrowth. Amazing to witness these shy reptiles up close. 👀

With its mosaic of wetlands, ponds and rough grassland, Potteric Carr provides the perfect habitat for grass snakes offering plenty of shelter, basking spots and food.

Moments like this are a great reminder of how special this reserve really is! 💚 What will you discover this summer?

Rainy days are frog days! 🐸

With the wet weather returning, it's the perfect time to appreciate some of nature's most fascinating amphibians. Frogs love damp conditions – rain helps keep their skin moist, creates breeding habitats, and brings out plenty of food for them to enjoy.

Why not use this rainy spell as inspiration to learn more about these remarkable creatures at our Children's Frog Workshop at Potteric Carr?

Join frog expert, artist and author Paul Morton for a fascinating journey into the world of frogs from around the globe. Children will enjoy frog-themed crafts, hear about the popular Bug Belly books, and take part in a hands-on pond dipping session to discover the amazing creatures living in Potteric Carr's ponds.

Perfect for young nature lovers aged 5+ who want to discover more about frogs, toads, and the wonderful wildlife found right on their doorstep.

Book now and make a splash into the fascinating world of frogs!

Bev’s yummy mature cheddar and caramelised red onion scones have done down a treat in the cafe today. 😋 So much so, they’re nearly scone! 😂 Come and grab the last one and enjoy a brew with a (slightly wet!) view.

Beneath the surface at Potteric Carr, there’s a hidden success story…

Stoneworts are a type of algae - think of them as freshwater seaweed - that thrive in clean, unpolluted ponds. They need just the right conditions to flourish, including a little natural disturbance (often from grazing cattle) to keep other plants in check.

Thanks to the creation of dozens of ponds over the past 20 years, Potteric Carr has become a true hotspot for stoneworts!

What’s been fluttering after dark at Potteric Carr? 🌙✨

Our team have been busy moth trapping, helping to record the incredible variety of species that call the reserve home. Recording wildlife like this is so important - it helps us build a clearer picture of how populations are doing, so we can better protect them for the future. 🦋

Did you know moths are vital pollinators and a key part of the food chain? The more we learn about them, the better we can care for these often-overlooked species.
Want to discover the magic for yourself? Join us for our Moth Discovery Mornings: www.ywt.org.uk/events/2026-06-17-moth-discovery-mornings-potteric-carr
