So a Country Market in Ireland is a local, co-operative community market where members sell home-grown fruit, vegetables, fresh farm produce, home baking, jams, and traditional handmade crafts. FORWARD Project hosted a very successful event at the Ráth Mór Centre as part of our Culture and Conflict In Your Face programme, exploring the important themes of Understanding Internment and Commemoration.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the event such a success. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to our wonderful speakers for sharing their personal experiences, stories and insights.

The FORWARD project had a wonderful day spent exploring Fort Dunree and the Famine Village. From the stunning views to the powerful history of the Famine Village, it was a day to remember.

FORWARD held an Understanding the Borderlands study trip that started in M**f, Bridgend, Newtown Cunningham, and finished up at Grianán of Aileach, where we took in the stunning views. 🏔️

We looked at the emergence and existence of the border and the impact it has had on the communities that live there.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended—it's always great to see familiar faces, and we were especially delighted to welcome so many new participants. ☺️

In June 2026 the FORWARD Project undertook a Study Visit to the Balkans, visiting the Border area between Croatia and Bosnia. This is an area steeped in centuries of conflict, most recently during World War 2 and the again in the 1990s. The area was also impacted by 2 major earthquakes in December 2020.

We looked at conflict and peacebuilding, history, legacy issues, memorialisation and remembrance, culture, language, loss and victims, perpetrators and restraint, civil society, the role of NGOs, rebuilding after conflict and natural disasters, politics, religion, flags and emblems, minorities and majorities, sites of significance and so much more.

We undertook guided tours, engaged with experts, had panels of speakers, workshops, site visits, met victims / former combatants / survivors, engaged all sides. We explored issues which led to conflict, which made the conflict worse, which ended the conflict.

Our group was very mixed and participants came from a wide range of backgrounds from different communities on both sides of our Border. The Study visit strengthened our relationships and ability to discuss difficult issues, themes and events. Our evaluation showed that everyone had gained insight and learning, had built new friendships and created lasting relationships and that the Study Visit had been a great success.

We plan to have follow up activity for participants back home and to explore other international conflict / peacebuilding situations.

The FORWARD Project will organise a number of Study Visits to the Balkans over the next few years.
