Ballyarnett Summer Motorbike & E-bike Ride Right Programme

Over the summer months, 10 young people from the Ballyarnett area of Derry will participate in a structured diversionary programme at Magilligan Motorbike Track. The initiative has been developed to provide young people with a safe, positive, and educational outlet while addressing the growing impact that the unsafe and reckless use of motorbikes/ E-bikes and E-Scooters is having within local communities.

Through professionally supervised sessions at the track, participants will gain practical experience in responsible motorbike riding, develop an understanding of essential safety procedures, and learn about the legal responsibilities associated with operating motorbikes. The programme will encourage participants to recognise the difference between riding in a controlled environment and engaging in dangerous or reckless behaviour on public roads and within residential areas.

Alongside the practical element, the programme will explore the wider consequences of irresponsible bike use, including the risks of serious injury, the impact on families and local residents, damage to community relations, and the pressures placed on emergency services. The aim is to increase awareness, promote personal responsibility, and support young people in making safer and more informed choices.

The initiative is being ran collaboratively by Community Restorative Justice(CRJ) and Skeoge Hub and supported by local housing providers Radius and Apex and Ballyarnett Neighbourhood Policing Team.

By combining positive diversionary activities with education and community engagement, the project seeks to strengthen relationships with young people, reduce anti-community behaviour, and contribute to creating safer neighbourhoods across Ballyarnett.

Speaking about the initiative, Dearbhla Deery, CRJ Coordinator, said:

"We know that many young people have a genuine interest in motorbikes and Electric bikes, and this programme is about channelling that interest in a positive and safe way. By giving participants access to a professional track environment, they can develop new skills, build confidence, and understand the responsibilities that come with riding. At the same time, we'll have honest conversations about the impact that reckless bike use can have on individuals, families, and the wider community. Our hope is that these young people become positive role models who encourage safer choices and help make Ballyarnett a safer place for everyone."

This partnership reflects a shared commitment to investing in young people, providing constructive opportunities during the summer months, and helping to build a culture of responsibility, respect, and community pride. With a huge thanks to all funders and partners.
