PLAYER SPOTLIGHT | JAY CLARKE 🎾

From Derbyshire roots to the world stage!

Born and raised in Derby, Jay Clarke first picked up a tennis racket at just three years old, inspired and encouraged by his family, particularly his sister Yasmin Yasmin Clarke , who also pursued a career in professional tennis.

Showing talent from an early age, Jay reached European No. 1 at under-14 level and represented Great Britain in international competitions.

His journey from Derbyshire to professional tennis hasn’t always been easy, but through hard work and perseverance, Jay has gone on to achieve some remarkable milestones.

Among his career highlights are reaching a career-high ATP singles ranking of World No. 153, winning his first ATP Challenger singles title in China in 2019 and competing on the famous grass courts of Wimbledon.

In 2017, Jay reached the third round of Wimbledon men’s doubles alongside Marcus Willis, defeating the defending champions along the way. The following year, he reached the Wimbledon mixed doubles semi-finals with Harriet Dart.

One of his most memorable moments came in 2019, when he faced tennis legend Roger Federer on Centre Court at Wimbledon , having won his opening singles match.

More recently, Jay has continued to demonstrate his determination on the professional circuit, adding further ATP Challenger titles to his achievements.

From Derbyshire to competing on the world stage, Jay’s journey is an inspiration to the next generation of players across our county.

As Jay continues his professional tennis journey, we’re delighted to see him working with his new coach, Tom Rushby Tom Rushby, a former professional tennis player with strong Derbyshire roots.

Congratulations on your achievements, Jay! We wish you and Tom every success in this exciting next chapter and look forward to following your journey!

We simply couldn’t create James’s farewell picture without including Chesterfield's (Ches Vegas) famous Crooked Spire! After all, anyone who knows James knows that his love for his hometown is probably stronger than his love for tennis!

We thought we’d better include it, otherwise we’d never hear the end of it!

And now a few words from the man himself :

"Having played tennis in Chesterfield from the age of seven, alongside my two older sisters who played County tennis, and having represented Derbyshire myself from the age of nine all the way through to senior level, my involvement in all things Derbyshire Tennis has now spanned 44 years (so far!).

During that time, some key people inspired me to see the merits of volunteering and giving back to the tennis community.

These include my late father, who served on the DTA Committee and was the U18 County Cup Captain; Derek Wardle, who was instrumental in creating a vibrant Chesterfield Tennis Club for everyone and championed Derbyshire Tennis with the kindest of spirits; Roger Thompson, who took the time to offer support and much-needed match development opportunities for numerous juniors; John Briggs, who did the same for many years at Watchorn; and Margaret Robinson, who was always encouraging and pushing things forward.

Without these people, and many, many more, Derbyshire would not be where it is today — a county that continues to punch well above its weight.

I hope the next generation will recognise the benefits and rewards of giving back to the tennis community. Hopefully, they won’t have to navigate challenges such as the LTA governance restructure and Covid!

Thank you to all my fellow committee members, past and present, and here’s to a continued positive future for Derbyshire Tennis".

Best wishes, JG
