Small Community Engagement Grant Now Open - up to £600 - Community Health Alliance - Partnership between the NHS and Black communities

About the Community Health Alliance (CHA)
The Community Health Alliance is a partnership between the NHS and Black communities in Derby and Derbyshire. It aims to make sure Black communities are heard and their voices are fed into improving local services.
We want to support engagement that supports real, meaningful involvement from communities.

About the grant
Community Action Derby is managing this grant on behalf of the NHS Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Board.
Groups can apply for up to £600 to support one community engagement event. This could be a community-led engagement event, or a marketplace event (where multiple organisations or groups set up stalls for people to visit).
The funding can help cover costs such as: Venue or event costs, travel, food, training etc.

What the funding is for
The funding is to support community organisations to:
· Talk to local people about their experiences of NHS services
· Help us understand what works well and what needs to improve
· Identify health inequalities and gaps in services
Successful organisations will:
· Attend a short training session
· Run one community workshop
· Collect feedback safely and anonymously
· Share what they learn

What will happen with the feedback?
· The feedback will be made into a report
· The report and feedback will be used to create an action plan.
· The Community Health Alliance will work together with communities and partners to carry out this action plan.

Who can apply?
This grant is open to:
· Voluntary and community organisations
· Groups working with Black, African, Caribbean, or Black ancestry mixed heritage communities
· Organisations that want to reach people in Derby city or Derbyshire.
Key dates
· Applications open: 3 July 2026
· Applications close: 23 July 2026
· Projects will run between August and October 2026

Don’t Let General Practice Go the Way of Dentistry

The NHS was founded on a simple principle: healthcare should be available according to need, not ability to pay.

General practice is the front door of the NHS. It is where illnesses are detected early, long-term conditions are managed, and patients build trusted relationships with healthcare professionals.

Many people are concerned about proposals for the future of general practice, including the BMA’s “Plan B” discussions. While these proposals arise from genuine pressures facing GPs, there are concerns that some changes could move us towards a two-tier system, similar to what many people feel has happened with NHS dentistry.

GPs are not the problem. They are working under immense pressure. The real challenges are underfunding, workforce shortages and rising demand.

What Can We Do Now?

1. Get informed

Read about the BMA’s “Plan B” proposals and understand the debate.

2. Contact your MP

Ask them whether they support GP services remaining free at the point of use.

3. Join your GP’s Patient Participation Group (PPG)

Patients have a voice in shaping local services.

4. Raise the issue locally

Speak to councillors, Healthwatch and NHS leaders about your concerns.

5. Support NHS staff

Advocate for better funding, recruitment and retention of GPs and other healthcare professionals.

6. Share information responsibly

Encourage informed discussion in your community.

Our NHS is not perfect but it’s Ours!
The future of the NHS is not inevitable, it is shaped by the choices we make today.

Protect GP access. Protect the NHS. Protect each other.

Jhané Gibson Becomes the 2026 MasterChef Champion

Jhané Gibson, who is from London and of Jamaican descent, developed her passion for cooking through the influence of her mother and grandmother. She grew up surrounded by Caribbean flavours, with her mum often hosting parties and family gatherings.

Jhané aspires to run a local pub one day, admiring how pubs serve as the heartbeat of their communities.

Hello Everyone,

We are looking for local people to join our Maternity and Neonatal Champion programme. Please also see attached poster.

Derbyshire Maternity Neonatal Voices are setting up a new group called the Maternity and Neonatal Health Inequalities Forum. This group will bring together community members, the NHS, councils and local organisations. We will work together to make maternity and neonatal care better for everyone.
The group will be friendly and supportive. It will focus on services linked to Royal Derby Hospital.

What will happen in the group?
You will:
See how people’s views help improve services
Work together to find solutions
Hear updates about what is changing
Share experiences and ideas from your community

We know that people have different experiences of maternity care. Some communities face more challenges. We want to listen, learn and make things better together.

Training – There will be 3 sessions around 2 hours long during the daytime in July. Drinks and snacks will be provided. Dates to be confirmed.
Childcare funding can be provided to a registered childcare provider so you can attend the training sessions.
