📍 Derby, UK Adam Wilkinson, Chief Executive of Derby City Council.

The Derby Bosnia-Herzegovina Community Association was established in January 1995 and registered as a Charity in 1998. From year 2000 until 2009 we a have operated from former Bosnia-Herzegovina Community Centre on 1 Uttoxeter New Road which was officially opened on June 16th 2001, jointly by His Excellency the Ambassador of Bosnia-Herzegovina in London, Osman Topcagic, and the Mayor of Derby, Co

uncillor Janet Till. From September 2009 until June 2013, we operated from Gallery-Place of Welcome, delivering our services to our clients group as a "One Stop Shop". In June 2013, we moved to our permanent place, our own building Bosnia & Herzegovina Centre at 99 Curzon Street. The Centre was officially opened jointly by Ambassador of Bosnia Herzegovina in London, His Excellency Mustafa Mujezinovic and Mr. From the beginning the DBHCA has opened its services to the community, focusing it services on the people from Former Yugoslavia. Bosnia & Herzegovina Centre run by the executive committee of the Derby Bosnia-Herzegovina Community Association, is the only centre of this kind offering advice and information in the Bosnian/Serb/Croat language in the Derby City and East Midlands area. There are many services available to destitute asylum-seekers and refugees via Derby Refugee Forum and DRAC, including food parcels and clothing, help to small new community ethnic groups via ncise, and many other services offered from our "One Stop Shop" volunteers. We are also a member of the Bosnia-Herzegovina UK Network who operate nationally.

A positive conversation about the work we do and the challenges we face

Today we were pleased to welcome MP Catherine Atkinson, representing Derby North, and MP Baggy Shanker, representing Derby South, to the Bosnia & Herzegovina Centre for an open discussion about the wide range of work taking place at the Centre, particularly our support for refugees, people seeking asylum and other vulnerable communities across Derby.

We discussed the significant amount of statutory and community support we deliver, much of which directly supports and complements the work of local authority services. We also expressed our disappointment that, despite this contribution and the pressure we help relieve on statutory services, we currently receive no financial support from the local authority.

A major focus of our discussion was housing and homelessness, one of the biggest challenges we face every day. We talked about the urgent need for practical, long-term solutions and what more can be done locally and nationally to improve access to suitable housing and prevent homelessness.

For us, this is about more than supporting people in crisis. It is about influencing change and making sure the experiences of refugees, people seeking asylum and others we support are heard by those who can make a difference.

We are grateful to Catherine and Baggy for visiting the Centre, listening to our concerns and discussing how we can work together to create positive change.

Yesterday, the Derby Bosnia Herzegovina Community Association was honoured to host our annual Srebrenica Memorial Day Commemoration, bringing together survivors, community members, civic leaders, faith representatives, partner organisations and friends to remember the victims of the Srebrenica genocide and reaffirm our shared commitment to ensuring that hatred and genocide are never forgotten.

This year’s theme, “We Are Here,” reflected the resilience, strength and contribution of survivors who rebuilt their lives after unimaginable loss and who continue to enrich the communities they now call home.

We were privileged to welcome the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Andrew Cochrane, the Mayor of the City of Derby, Councillor Jonathan Smale, Catherine Atkinson MP, the Leader of Derby City Council, Councillor Nadine Peatfield, and Dr Kim Sadique, whose powerful keynote address reminded us of the importance of education, remembrance and challenging genocide denial.

The event also featured a moving performance by our Bosnian Supplementary School pupils, a breathtaking sand art performance by Bilal Kose, and the premiere of “All Steps Lead to Bosnia & Herzegovina Centre,” a film created as part of the Connecting Solidarities project, led by the University of Derby in partnership with the Derby Bosnia-Herzegovina Community Association. The film, created by Bosnian artist Lejla Kevrić with music performed by Nick Gregory, tells the story of the Bosnian community’s journey in Derby and the lasting contribution it continues to make to our city.

We were also deeply grateful to Susanna Petrosyan, Founder and Chair of the Armenian Women’s Network UK, who shared her own experience of displacement and highlighted the importance of solidarity between communities who have experienced conflict and forced migration.

The commemoration concluded with a heartfelt Prayer for Srebrenica, beautifully read by our Bosnian Supplementary School pupils Elma Makić and Harun Grabovica, followed by a moving flower-laying ceremony at the memorial.

We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who attended, to our speakers, performers, volunteers and supporters, and to all those who continue to stand with us in remembrance.

As we reflected today, the message of this year’s theme could not have been clearer:

We are here.

We are here to remember.

We are here to educate.

We are here to stand together against hatred and division.

We are here to ensure that future generations know the truth.
