A year ago, we asked for your help to fund a ton of ballast to complete the connection between Darlington Locomotive Works and the Bishop Auckland branch line.
Today, that investment showed its true potential.
What was created as a vital link for A1 Class No. 60163 Tornado’s maintenance and stabling has become something much bigger — a working heritage railway bringing steam rides to the heart of Darlington through a hire by Hopetown. That hire in turn will help to build and maintain our steam locomotives.
On a beautiful day, scores of people were able to experience the sights, sounds, and atmosphere of steam travel right here in the town where railway history was made.
This is why we believe preserving and improving railway infrastructure matters. Every sleeper, rail, and tonne of ballast helps keep steam alive — not just for locomotives, but for communities, families, and future generations.
Thank you to everyone who supported the project and helped make days like this possible. What a way to keep steam moving and inspire people along the way 🚂
