🚂💨 This time last week our very first run of steam train rides were entering their last day of operation, and what an incredible four days it turned out to be!

We were absolutely delighted to welcome just short of 1,100 passengers on board, that’s around 275 smiling faces each day enjoying the journey.

Here are a few highlights from those special days:
↔️ Each ride covered approximately 5.5 km (3.4 miles) and lasted around 20 minutes.
🛤️ The train travelled an impressive 49.5 km (30.7 miles) per day — that’s 3 hours of continuous steaming up and down the line.
🕰️ Across all four days, the locomotive clocked up around 198 km (123 miles)... that’s a total of 12 hours of running time. And that’s only counting when passengers were on board!

It was a fantastic start for our steam experiences, filled with excitement, nostalgia, and plenty of unforgettable moments. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us.

As ever, keep visiting hopetowndarlington.co.uk/steamrides to keep up to date with future train rides dates.

A year ago, we asked for your help to fund a ton of ballast to complete the connection between Darlington Locomotive Works and the Bishop Auckland branch line.

Today, that investment showed its true potential.

What was created as a vital link for A1 Class No. 60163 Tornado’s maintenance and stabling has become something much bigger — a working heritage railway bringing steam rides to the heart of Darlington through a hire by Hopetown. That hire in turn will help to build and maintain our steam locomotives.

On a beautiful day, scores of people were able to experience the sights, sounds, and atmosphere of steam travel right here in the town where railway history was made.

This is why we believe preserving and improving railway infrastructure matters. Every sleeper, rail, and tonne of ballast helps keep steam alive — not just for locomotives, but for communities, families, and future generations.

Thank you to everyone who supported the project and helped make days like this possible. What a way to keep steam moving and inspire people along the way 🚂

We are thrilled to announce that LNER A1 Pacific 60163 “Tornado” will be returning to the Swanage Railway to take part in our Autumn Steam Gala! 🌪️

Well done to all of those who guessed correctly and noticed the LNER themed clues in our post on Tuesday night. The locomotive will hopefully “Blow” you all away and it has featured on TV shows such as Top Gear as well as the children’s film “Paddington 2”.

“Tornado” last operated services on the railway at our Spring Gala in 2014, so we are really excited to be welcoming her back to the railway. The locomotive will be in use across the whole length of the line between Bridge Four at the River Frome and Swanage. Our home fleet of locomotives will also be in steam at the event and with a bit of luck another visitor will be too… more to follow on that one! 🤭

Tickets will be available nearer the date but keep your eyes peeled on our social media pages for more updates as well as on the event page on our website - https://www.swanagerailway.co.uk/events/view/autumn-steam-gala-1

We would like to thank The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust for allowing the locomotive to visit us for the event.

By building new main line steam locomotives, heritage engineering is not just being preserved — it is being kept alive and working on today’s national network for future generations to experience.

Just as importantly, the skills needed to maintain and operate these engines are being passed on.

Every member of today’s crew is under 35, proving that the knowledge, skills, and passion behind steam will continue for decades to come.

Tornado stands ready for a big day ahead.

Leaving Darlington Locomotive Works this morning, the A1 will steam the short distance to Bank Top to help celebrate the opening of Darlington Station. Tornado will then head south to the National Railway Museum at York to pick up ‘Grandpa’ before making their way to the Great Central Railway (North) for a busy weekend of operations!

📷 We would love to see your photos if you’re out to see No.60163 today - share them on social media or email [email protected]
